About

Organizational Structure

News Detective, LLC is an independent limited liability company registered in Illinois, dedicated solely to providing accurate and transparent fact-checking through training, education, and support for social media users. The organization, which is unaffiliated with any governmental, partisan, or 2nd party commercial interests and does not accept funding from political sources, currently fact-checks an average of 50 items per week. News Detective focuses on claims that impact public welfare and can clarify significant issues for society, avoiding those that are trivial, spurious, or relevant only to a few individuals.

Fairness

News Detective operates with strict non-partisanship and fairness, ensuring that all claims are checked objectively regardless of their source. Fact-checkers are free to select claims to check from all requests submitted, and use a consistent methodology for fact checking. Multiple fact-checkers may verify the same claim, with all findings transparently posted for users. Professional fact checkers acting as moderators prioritize claims based on their importance and societal relevance, avoiding spurious, insignificant, or excessive claims from any single side, while ensuring balanced coverage. Relevant interests of sources are disclosed when they may affect the fact-check, and the organization is fully transparent about any relationships related to its fact-checks. As an independent entity unaffiliated with any political party, candidate, or partisan interest, News Detective applies unbiased standards, supports full disclosure of sources and methods, and strives to provide accurate, timely information for informed public discourse. News Detective is apolitical and dedicated to uncovering the verifiable truth, and does not support or advocate for any public policy or position.

Standards

News Detective’s fact-checking process requires the clear citation of sources, including live links to online documents, so users can easily review the evidence. Fact-checkers follow a standardized response template with a checklist to ensure the use and disclosure of publicly available sources without compromising personal security. Our methodology prioritizes primary sources whenever possible, with credible secondary sources used when necessary, and encourages the use of multiple sources for key claims. Fact checks also disclose any relevant interests of sources that could influence the accuracy of their evidence. For more details, visit our “How to Fact-Check” page.

Funding

News Detective operates independently and is not a section or unit of any other organization, including media outlets. Our funding comes from grants provided by MIT DesignX, MIT Sandbox, the IFCN Global Fact Check Fund, and Hacks/Hackers, and Bluesky.

Organizational Structure and Editorial Control

News Detective operates under a clear organizational structure designed to ensure independent and high-quality editorial output. The organization’s founder, Ilana Strauss, and moderator, Naseem Ferdowsi, jointly exercise editorial control. Together, they oversee the fact-checking process, ensuring accuracy, fairness, and consistency across all published content. Fact-checkers work independently to research and write fact checks, which are then reviewed and approved by our Senior Moderator before publication. Users and factcheckers can easily communicate with the editorial team by means of the ND system, which being a social media platform itself allows open communication among all participants.

Team

Ilana Strauss (Founder and Editor in Chief)

Ilana Strauss founded News Detective after a 15-year career in journalism, during which she contributed to renowned publications such as National Geographic, The Atlantic, and The Economist. Most relevantly, Ilana worked as a fact-checker for Politifact, where she was part of a team hired by Facebook and TikTok to verify the accuracy of viral posts. Recognizing the challenges platforms faced in addressing the overwhelming volume of misinformation, Ilana created News Detective to provide a scalable, user-driven solution for fact-checking.

Gabriel Zanetti (Systems Architect)

Gabriel Zanetti is a skilled PHP developer, and is best known for founding Question2Answer (Q2A), a widely recognized open-source Question2Answer platform on which News Detective is based. Gabriel’s expertise in software development ensures that News Detective’s platform is user-friendly, efficient, and capable of handling a high volume of submissions.

Naseem Ferdowsi (Senior Moderator and Editor)

Naseem Ferdowsi serves as the Senior Moderator for fact-checking at News Detective. She brings her extensive experience as a journalist, editor, content strategist, and communications professional Currently also working with Politifact, Naseem has a strong background in news media, management consulting, and education. She plays a key role in evaluating the importance of submitted claims, ensuring balance and fairness in claim selection, and maintaining editorial quality, and coaching and training fact checkers.

Methodology

News Detective’s methodology for selecting, researching, writing, and publishing fact checks ensures accuracy, fairness, and relevance. Moderators select claims based on their social importance, public interest, and benefits to general welfare, rejecting those deemed trivial, spurious, or frivolous. Research focuses on identifying the main claim and evaluating its primary source for support, accuracy, and context, while using secondary sources only when justified and crosschecking multiple sources to ensure reliability. Our training emphasizes presenting all relevant evidence for and against claims, maintaining the same high standards for all claims regardless of their source, and ensuring equivalent claims are researched consistently, through moderator oversight. Fact-checkers are encouraged to contact claimants for supporting evidence when feasible but can proceed without responses, considering safety or other legitimate concerns. Fact-checkers draft responses using a standardized template, which includes a best-practices checklist, and all fact checks undergo moderator review. Users are encouraged to submit claims directly through our platform to facilitate the fact-checking process.

Factchecking Checklist (located on fact-checking response form when fact-checkers submit a response)

- Always list your sources and include links so readers can check them for themselves.
- Use primary sources when you can, and only go to credible secondary sources if necessary.
- Try to rely on more than one source, especially for big claims.
- Point out if sources you quote have interests that could affect how accurate their evidence is, and what those interests might be.
- Watch for bias in sources and let readers know if you find anything that might influence a source’s perspective.
- Show all the important evidence, whether it supports or goes against the claim.
- If safe and possible, try contacting the maker of the original claim for supporting evidence.

Choice of Claims and Corrections Policy

News Detective verifies factual claims in public discourse, such as statements by public figures, media reports, and viral content, but does not address subjective opinions, predictions, satire, or personal interpretations unless they involve factual assertions. If a significant mistake is identified, we add a correction comment directly to the original fact check to ensure transparency. If you believe we have made a significant mistake, please reach out to us on our contact page.

Background

FAQ

What is News Detective?

News Detective partners with social media platforms that need factcheching and university classes of students learning journalism. The platforms and students themselves submit claims they want fact-checked, and the students factcheck on News Detective. A professional factcheckers acts as a moderator and teacher, giving them advice and selecting best answers. Those answers then go back to the social media platforms. Currently, News Detective is working with Bluesky, a 5 million-user fact-checking platform.

What are News Detective's origins?

Ilana Strauss has worked as a journalist for 15 years for The Atlantic, National Geographic, The Economist, and other publications. She was a factchecker for Facebook, TikTok, Politifact, and Readers Digest. After seeing the problems social media was dealing with in fact-checking first-hand, she knew there had to be a better way.

Who are these mysterious factcheckers on News Detective?

Mainly journalism students, but everyone is welcome to take part.

Everyone? But aren't people biased, and trolling, and spreading misinformation on purpose?

We start with crowdsourcing, but we don't end there. The thing is, this entire platform is moderated by professional factcheckers, and only factchecks they approve go out into the social media world. The rest just stays on News Detective, which is more of a bubbling cauldron of ideas. (That being said, if you are obviously misusing the platform, we reserve the right to kick you off it.)

Isn't truth subjective?

Sure. Sometimes. But a lot of times, it's really not. Factchecking is a science that uses techniques like examining the author, finding out how the author got their information, etc. Fake news tends to get this stuff wrong.

What if part of an article/post is true and part isn't?

This is why we check "main claims," not whole articles. Post just the main claim the article is trying to make.

Can't AI just take care of factchecking?

Misinformation is made to trick real humans. People can definitely make misinformation that tricks AI. AI is also just not very transparent, and biased towards the opinions of those who program it. (That being said we do use AI to make News Detective more efficient! We just don't let it factcheck.)

How is News Detective different than other factchecking sites?

News Detective is crowdsourced, meaning potentially millions or billions of people can factcheck on it. Other factchecking sites are limited to a small number of hired professional journalists. In an age where billions of pieces of content come out everyday, we believe that a firehose-style solution like News Detective is necessary. It's also great for media literacy, as people learn by doing.

Additionally, the factchecks on News Detective that have been approved by a professional factchecker appear directly on social media, so you can them just by being online — you don't have to go to News Detective.

Still, we think other factchecking sites are necessary too — misinformation is a big problem that requires a lot of different solutions. News Detective is crowdsourced, meaning potentially millions or billions of people can factcheck on it. Other factchecking sites are limited to a small number of hired professional journalists. In an age where billions of pieces of content come out everyday, we believe that a firehose-style solution like News Detective is necessary.
