The source that I found that I used to research this claim seems to be a false story or had questionable content/information. This claim states that a woman threw away her Stanley water bottle after it caused lead poisoning in her three-year-old. The article then states that the woman herself conducted a lead test to confirm that the container contained lead. The source then uses a source from TikTok that included a user posting a video of a cotton swab claiming to prove the presence of lead to provide evidence for this claim. Although the evidence in this source seems askew and unreliable I do believe the purpose of this article is good-intentioned.

I appreciate your analysis of Stanley's containing lead. I do believe some wordage in your fact-check is askew. For example, you said 'caused' in the sentence "woman threw away her Stanley water bottle after it caused lead poisoning in her three-year-old." Which in the article you provided, isn't the case. In the article, it relayed "one woman claimed, her Stanley cup contained lead, and could potentially cause lead poisoning in her 3-year-old child." A part of the manufacturing process includes the sealing material, which contains some lead. However, that particular area is covered with durable stainless steel. I would say this article adequately describes why there are traces of lead found in Stanley cups, along with their safety measures to make sure customers are healthy and using a reliable product.

Great reply, Sophia! I agree that the article shows authenticity and mentions there's lead in a Stanley. It's also good that they explain the steps they're taking and the safety measures to make sure it's not harmful.

I was very interested when I found this claim because I saw this on my Instagram feed today. At first I thought it was just another claim trying to cancel something in trend, but after more research I believe that the claim is true. Stanley spoke to NBC news and said that the manufacturing company uses metal palettes with a small trace of lead. This makes me believe that all these claims are true and there are trace amounts of lead in Stanleys. However, where the lead is in the cup would not give lead poising from drinking in it. The cups are safe to drink in and would not give people lead poisoning.

Nice find on the article, it did a good job of sourcing to the original text of the manufacturing company saying that there is indeed lead in the product. That link can be found in the article as well as from the official social media page of the Product saying that there is lead in the product, but it has to be damaged first. I do believe this fact check, that there is lead in the product, however, since its in an area that is hard to damage to get to the lead, I think the product is safe to be consumed.

I agree that the article was being honest about the lead content in the Stanley's. It's nice to see them outlining the precautions and safety measures that they are implementing to ensure that they are safe to use.

I think you did a good job finding the original source of the article. I do believe this fact check and that there is lead in the product, but it does say that it has to be damaged before lead poisoning can occur.

The claim that "Stanleys contain lead" is misleading without adding context. Stanley cups do use lead in the production of their cups but only in a sealed container in the base for sealing the vacuum insulation. TODAY Health quotes Stanley in an article, "no lead is present on the surface of any Stanley product that comes into contact with the consumer nor the contents of the product." TODAY confirms that lead is used in the cups but it only poses a risk when the cup is damaged in certain conditions exposing the lead. An article released by TIME reports a lawsuit against Stanley, where Stanley responded with the fact that they use an industry-standard pellet with lead, that is then sealed around with stainless steel, protecting contents from any contact. Along with legal suits and public concern, health experts also joined into the conversation. An article by Forbes explains how health experts found insufficient evidence in proving that the lead in Stanleys cups posed a risk to users. Jack Caravanos, a public health professor at NYU, adds that he "did extensive testing of the cup and found no evidence that lead was readily present, and he noted he was unable to intentionally pry open the base of the cup, suggesting exposure to the lead inside there is unlikely." In all, it is accurate that lead exists somewhere in the product, but the claim "Stanleys contain lead" implies a health risk despite that not being the case. The claim is misleading without extended context.

Overall, the claim that Stanley tumblers contain lead is technically true, but it can be misleading without context. Stanley does confirm that some of its products use a lead-containing material in the manufacturing process in order to create the vacuum insulation. However, the lead is sealed inside the bottom of the tumbler and covered with stainless steel, so it does not normally come into contact with the drink or person using the cup. 

  Stanley directly acknowledges that its manufacturing process uses a sealing material that contains lead in order to create the vacuum insulation. The company explains that this area is completely covered by a durable stainless-steel layer which makes the lead inaccessible during normal use. 

  The second source I found was consumer safety officials and an environmental health expert investigated these claims of lead in Stanleys. When testing the cups exterior, lid, and drinking surface there was no detection of lead, and the U.S. Consumer Products Safety commission said that at home lead testing kits are not reliable for testing consumer products.

  PolitiFact investigated social-media claims that Stanley cups tested positive for lead inside the part where people drink from. In this investigation it was confirmed that lead is used in the sealing material at the base of the cups, but when tested by a lead expert there was nothing found concerning lead on the outside, lid, or drinking surfaces. PolitiFact said that the claim that the inside of the cups contain lead is false. 

  A secondary source I found was from The Washington Post. They interviewed several experts about the lead concerns surrounding Stanley tumblers. One environmental-health expert tested five Stanley cups and did not find lead on the top, sides, bottom, or lip of the cups. The experts explained that lead-containing material is sealed inside the base and that exposure would be very unlikely unless the protective seal inside were to be damaged. 

  Stanley shows interest in reassuring customers that its products are safe because it manufactures and sells the tumblers. The Consumer Safety Commission's role is to protect consumers, so it had an interest in identifying unsafe products rather than protecting a company. PolitiFact is a fact checking organization whose goal is to evaluate claims, although its conclusions depend on the evidence and experts it uses. The Washington Post is a news organization and may have an interest in reporting stories that will attract readers, but it interviewed multiple health and lead-exposure experts rather than relying solely on Stanley's statements. 

  The strongest evidence I gathered that supports this claim is from Stanley themselves. Their own admission explained that they use a sealing material that contains the lead and is used at the base of their products in order to create the vacuum insulation. So, it would be inaccurate to say that Stanley products have never contained lead but they are very aware about the safety concerns. 

  The claim becomes misleading if it suggests that lead is present in the part of the Stanley where people drink or that normal use exposes consumers to lead. Stanley says the lead-containing seal is covered by stainless steel, and testing by a lead expert confirmed that there is no detectable lead on the outside, lid, or drinking surfaces. 

  Stanley tumblers do contain lead-containing material in the sealing process, so the basic claim is technically true. However, the lead is located in the sealed base of the tumbler and is covered by stainless steel. The evidence does not show that lead is present on the drinking surface of the tumbler or that normal use of a Stanley exposes consumers to lead. So the basic claim that Stanleys contain lead is true, but it is sealed and not dangerous to drink out of.

After researching the claim “Stanleys contain lead,” I found that the claim is technically true but misleading and pretty exaggerated. Stanley has acknowledged that some of its products use a l material that contains lead during the manufacturing process, however, the lead is sealed underneath a stainless-steel layer, so it does not come into contact with the drink or the person using the cup.

Evidence from  Stanley’s website, Nebraska Medicine, Harvard School of Public Health, and Verywell Health all supports this conclusion. The main issue with the claim is that it leaves out the most important part, that the lead is contained inside the cup and is not normally accessible to consumers.


 

Stanley confirms that its manufacturing process does use a material that contains lead, however, the company explains that the material is sealed and covered by stainless steel. Stanley states, “the sealing material includes lead. Once sealed, this area is covered with a durable stainless steel layer”. Stanley also came out and said “no lead is present on the surface of any Stanley 1913 product that comes into contact with the consumer nor the contents of the product”. This is very important because it shows that the statement “Stanleys contain lead” leaves out where the lead actually is. The lead is part of the manufacturing process, but it is not supposed to be on the surface of the cup or in the part that actually hold the drink. 

Nebraska Medicine interviewed Dr. Joseph Clemons, who is an emergency medicine physician and associate medical director of the Nebraska Regional Poison Control Center. He addressed the controversy over this specific claim directly and said that “All the media attention on this is probably overblown and should not cause alarm or over-concern" (para. 4). He also explained why an intact Stanley cup is not dangerous, “The lead is sealed underneath a stainless-steel layer preventing it from leaking into the contents of the mug unless the water bottle has been severely damaged” (para. 4), This evidence goes strongly against the idea that just by simply drinking from a Stanley cup you are going to be exposed to lead. Dr. Clemons does acknowledge that lead exposure is dangerous, but he makes a clear distinction between the danger of lead and the actual risk you have to being exposed by using an intact Stanley Cup. 

Harvard explains that the lead-containing material is covered by a steel barrier. Harvard expert Ronnie Levin warns that lead is dangerous as he calls it “an all-systems toxin” (para. 3). However, the most important piece of evidence for this specific investigation is her explanation of an intact Stanley cup where she says “if that barrier [on the Stanley cup] remains intact, you won’t be exposed to any lead and won’t suffer any negative outcomes” (para. 5).This supports the argument that the original claim is misleading. Levin acknowledged that lead is present inside the manufacturing system, but it also explains that the protective barrier prevents exposure as long as the water bottle remains intact.

Verywell Health interviewed Kelly Krisna Johnson-Arbor, who is a medical toxicologist at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. This article quotes Stanley saying that the lead containing material is covered by stainless steel. Johnson- Arbor then explained that “If people have the Stanley cups that are intact and not damaged, and not falling apart, this is really not an issue” (para. 5). Verywell Health also said that “You shouldn’t have to worry about lead exposure unless the base cap or the seal is damaged” (para. titled “what this means for you”). This provides yet another opinion from a medical professional that supports the conclusion that normal use of an undamaged Stanley cup does not mean that you are going to be exposed to lead. 

An article from BBC investigates whether consumers should actually be concerned about the lead used in Stanley cups. I thought this article was interesting because it provides us with additional context about the controversy and explains the difference between lead being used inside the manufacturing process and actual lead exposure. BBC talks about their interaction with Stanley and says ‘The BBC reached out to Stanley for additional comment and they responded with the same statement available on their website. The online statement concludes that Stanley products ’meet all US regulatory requirements’ “ (para. 5). This shows that even when reached out to by other big time companies, Stanley is persistent that their water bottles are safe to use. 

Stanley ultimately has a financial interest in making its products appear safe because that's what helps them sell their product. Therefore, their statements should not just be considered by themselves. However, the company’s explanation is supported by multiple medical experts, such as Nebraska Medicine and Harvard. These are both medical and academic organizations, so they do not have the same direct financial interest in Stanley. Their experts are useful because they focus on the health effects of lead exposure. 

Verywell Health and the BBC are news organizations, so they have an interest in attracting readers. However, they rely on medical experts and other sources rather than simply just making claims without any evidence. 

The claim that “Stanleys contain lead” is somewhat true, however it is misleading because it leaves out important context. Some Stanley products use a lead-containing material during their manufacturing process, but that material is sealed underneath stainless steel and is not accessible when consuming the content you put into the cup. The evidence from Stanley, Nebraska Medicine, Harvard, Verywell, and BBC all point to the same conclusion, that an intact Stanley cup does not normally expose the user to lead.  A more accurate and less misleading version of this claim would be “Some Stanley cups use a material that contains lead during the manufacturing process, but the lead is sealed underneath stainless steel and is not normally accessible to consumers”.
