Think of this as your investigation log. Answer each question to explain what you discovered and how you got there.
1. Write a brief overall summary of your findings.
This is a claim that has no support. The NBA has seen countless generational players come and go. The NBA has had Wilt Chamberlain, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Jordan, Shaq, Kobe, LeBron, Steph Curry, and even now they have great talent such as Jokic, Victor Wembanyama, SGA and other young players. The league always develops a new face of the league and LeBron will ultimately be replaced such as how every legend before him has been replaced.
2. What primary sources did you find (e.g., transcripts, videos of politician speeches, tweets from public figures, scientific studies)? For each source, write at least one or two sentences explaining what you learned. Include all links.
I used Basketball Reference to look at former players and their stats. I checked out their advanced stats, their accolades and their number of championships.
3. What secondary sources did you find (e.g., newspapers, magazines)? Only use secondary sources if sufficient primary sources are not available. For each source, write at least one or two sentences explaining what you learned. Include all links.
Former Bulls Hall of Famer explains why Michael Jordan is NBA GOAT over LeBron James | Sporting News
I used the above source as evidence that opinions change. Jordan was viewed as the undisputed GOAT before LeBron. Now there is real debate on who is the best player ever.
4. What potential biases or interests might each of your sources have?
My first source is just stats provided by the NBA but the second source can be biased because a former Jordan teammate was talking about him. There could be favoritism on his part since he did play with Jordan.
5. What evidence supports the claim you are fact-checking?
There are videos of where Wilt Chamberlain is being interviewed and they are saying he is the GOAT. There are videos of players saying Majic Johnson and Larry Bird are the best to ever do it. Every few decades a new player emerges in the NBA and they make a claim to be the best of all time.
6. What evidence undermines the claim you are fact-checking?
LeBron has done what few have ever been able to do in the NBA, stay healthy for such a long time. His records may never be broken not because of how amazing he was but because of how healthy he was.
7. What happened when you tried contacting the person or group who made the original claim? (Always try to contact them—it’s okay if you don’t get a reply. For example, if the claim is that the president said something, try reaching out to the administration. If it was a Bluesky user, message that user on Bluesky.
I did not try to contact them.
