The USCP accepted the findings from the District of Columbia's Office of the Chief Medical Examiner that Officer Brian Sicknick died of natural causes. However, their press release emphasized, "This does not change the fact Officer Sicknick died in the line of duty, courageously defending Congress and the Capitol." NPR reported similarly.

The stress Sicknick experienced during the Capitol riot may have increased his likelihood of having a stroke, according to CNN. Additionally, medical examiner Dr. Francisco Diaz told the Washington Post that "all that transpired" on January 6 "played a role in his condition."
