This person on BlueSky is saying that the group Antifa originated from the Nazi party, and that they continue to hold the same values despite changing their image. This claim is false. While it is true that modern Antifa has origins dating back to Germany, Antifa’s German origins are merely etymological, and nothing related to the Nazi party, or Nazi ideology. According to a BBC article explaining what Antifa is;

The user is a German speaker with content that seems to largely related to politics, with posts expressing their opinion against “the left.” The icons chosen in their user name allow one to infer that they are a Christian and perhaps conservative, giving one a better understanding of the source and the context behind the claim. Because of the personal nature of the profile and the chosen medium (social media) it is clear that this is not a reliable source. 

In 1932, the original Antifa flag was designed with two red flags enclosed in a red circle. The flags represented the unity between Social Democratic Party and the Communist Party of Germany. In the 1980s, it was reimagined to include Anarchism by replacing one red flag with a black flag. The claim that the ANTIFA flag and the Nazi Germany flag are the same except for their symbols is false. While both parties are considered to be radical, ANTIFA is an anti-fascist, anti-racist organization, and the Nazi party was a political party deeply routed in intense nationalism and extreme racism.

Both Nazism and ANTIFA are deeply routed in the idea of fascism, and to understand each party and their goals, it's first important to know what fascism is. While there are many movements and parties that branch from fascism, most have similar traits being, "extreme militaristic nationalism, contempt for electoral democracy and political and cultural liberalism, a belief in natural social hierarchy and the rule of elites, and the desire to create a Volksgemeinschaft (German: “people’s community”), in which individual interests would be subordinated to the good of the nation."(Soucy 26 Sep. 2025)

Nazism and the Nazi party was a totalitarian movement led by Adolf Hitler that was deeply routed in nationalism and dictatorial rule. "Nazism shared many elements with Italian fascism. However, Nazism was far more extreme both in its ideas and in its practice" (The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica 22 Oct. 2025). 

While it is true that the term ANTIFA originates from the German Antifa, the context is more important. The German word Antifa is "itself a shortened form of antifaschistisch (“antifascist”), which formed part of the name of a multiparty front initiated by the German Communist Party in 1932 to counter Nazism" (Kenny 16 Oct. 2025). With context provided, we can understand that even though it's origins is rooted in German, the term antifa stands against everything that the Nazi party believed in. 

While the flag colors may be similar, to say that the ANTIFA organization and the Nazi party have similar ideologies and are the same is wrong. Both are centralized around the idea of fascism however, one is a fascist party, and another is profoundly against fascism and it's beliefs.
