The claim that grocery prices in the United States have gone down is false. In an article by NBC News, they note that prices in eggs had declined from their peak in the Spring, but have since then gone back up. They also list popular foods, such as the price of ground beef, which is up 7% and orange juice is up 10% from where they were last year at the same time. This article does not support the claim that grocery prices have gone down in our nation.

https://www.nbcnews.com/data-graphics/grocery-price-tracker-inflation-trends-eggs-bread-trump-administration-rcna191508

The Economic Research Service did a study on the prices of food in our nation and expects there to be a rise in prices faster than the historical average rate of growth. “In 2025, prices for all food are predicted to increase 3.0 percent… Food-at-home prices are predicted to increase 2.4 percent…  Food-away-from-home prices are predicted to increase 3.9 percent.” They go on to predict 2026 as well and believe that there will be similar increments for each of the provided categories. So, no. The prices of groceries in the United States have not gone down.

So as I looked deeper, apparently this is a false statement with only some products like bread and eggs having decreased while almost everything else actually has been rising over the years still. Posted by the NBC News that food prices actually increased faster than the overall inflation by an increase of .4% from July 2025 to August of 2025. It states by the USDA that in 2025, prices for all food are predicted to increase 3.0 percent and that it is anticipated to increase faster than the historical average rate of growth. According to the USDA and NBC News this article does not actually support the claim that grocery prices are going down.

This claim is false. The prices for grocery items in the United States have increased compared to the prices a year ago. According to NBCNews.com, "Average orange juice prices are up 10%, and ground beef prices up 7% from where those were a year ago." This information disproves the original claim, but what about other grocery items? It was found that bacon is up $.49, chicken is up $.22, juice is up $.78, etc. This shows that grocery items are actually more expensive, rather than less expensive.

According to CNN.com, they also argue that grocery items are more expensive. "Grocery prices have continued to rise under Trump – and they were up even before he imposed near-global 10% tariffs earlier this month." Again, this just proves that the claim was not true. Also from CNN.com, "average March 2025 grocery prices were up about 0.49% from February 2025 ... That was the highest month-to-month grocery inflation rate since October 2022." We are not only experiencing more expensive groceries, but the highest jump in price in years.

The claim that grocery prices have gone down is not substantiated. The United States Consumer Price Index, published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, shows a 0.4 percent increase in supermarket food from July 2025 to August 2025. According to CEO Doug McMillon, Walmart, the largest supermarket chain in the world, said their prices are rising "each week." Since 2020, prices across the country have gone up 29% since Feb. 2020 as measured by the Bureau of Labor Statistics and reported on by NPR. NPR asserts prices hikes are related to the pandemic, Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the Avian Flu, and tariffs enacted by Donald Trump.

Claiming that grocery prices have gone down is not fully accurate. In recent years, the CPI (consumer price index) have increased by 2.2% over 12 months as well as "...0.4 on a seasonal adjusted basis in August, after rising 0.2 percent in July (https://www.bls.gov/news.release/cpi.nr0.htm). The claim that grocery prices in the U.S. have gone down is very misleading as sources claim prices have sky-rocketed in the past couple years. "Consumer prices increased 2.4% in May compared with a year ago..." (https://www.pbs.org/newshour/economy/u-s-inflation-rose-slightly-last-month-as-grocery-prices-ticked-higher). While the rate of inflation has slowed down compared to recent spikes in the last couple years, this does not mean that prices are going down but rather they are slowing increasing.

Great set of evidence you cited to back up your claim, very sturdy base proving yourself right!

This claim that grocery prices have gone down in the United States is nothing but misinformation. The U.S. Department of Agriculture states that from July 2025 to August 2025 food prices were 0.4% higher, and from August 2024 to August 2025 prices rose 3.2%. These numbers help us understand that we are far from a decline in grocery prices dropping; further still, the USDA expects a further increase in prices with a predicted interval anywhere from -1.8% to 7.5% with an estimated projection of a 2.7% increase on all food. https://www.ers.usda.gov/data-products/food-price-outlook/summary-findings

In the Bureau of Labor Statistics' economic news release, the only month in which there was a decline in price of groceries was April with a 0.1% decrease. When looking at whether or not it would be accurate to say that grocery prices are going down nation wide, you cannot simply take specific months, it needs to be a trend for multiple. https://www.bls.gov/news.release/cpi.nr0.htm

After realizing that the United States groceries are increasing, I wanted to see the comparison against other G20 nations. I thought this would be important to see since it is easy to focus on the negative in a situation especially to due with inflation, but with that being said, the united states ranks 8th in lowest food inflation rate among the G20. I want to reiterate that the claim is misinformation, but the post could've still focused on the positive that our county is doing well in relativity. https://tradingeconomics.com/country-list/food-inflation?continent=g20

The original claim that grocery prices in the U.S. have gone down is false.

At points earlier this year products like eggs did temporarily reduce, but that does not mean that overall all groceries have declined in price. A report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (https://www.bls.gov/news.release/cpi.nr0.htm) says that the “food at home” index rose 0.6% and the USDA (https://www.ers.usda.gov/data-products/food-price-outlook/summary-findings) project a 2.4% increase in “food at home” prices. And an article from Reuters (https://www.reuters.com/world/us/us-consumer-inflation-accelerates-weekly-jobless-claims-approach-four-year-high-2025-09-11/) says that grocery inflation has reached its highest in 2 years. The recent data from multiple verified sources show that there is still a grocery price increase overall.

After researching this claim that grocery prices have gone down, I have found that claim to be false. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, grocery prices are still higher than in previous years, as they continue to rise slightly each year. The NBC News Grocery Price Tracker also shows that most food items have increased significantly each year, with a notable 10% price increase on orange juice. They also show bacon has gone up $0.49 since last year. And the Ramsey Solutions state that food prices have been climbing since the pandemic due to inflation and chain cost. There is only research that supports an increase in prices, with no evidence of an overall drop in grocery prices supporting the fact that this claim is false.

This claim is false, an article I found from NPR (https://www.npr.org/2025/09/19/nx-s1-5539547/grocery-prices-tariffs-food-inflation) states that since the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 grocery prices have gone up a whopping 29%. This article also shows a clear chart with the prices going straight up with no downward progress of pricing to be seen at all. Not only is this claim false, it is in fact the opposite with rapid rising of prices in the United States.

This definitely seems like an incorrect claim. The Food inflation Calculator, food prices in the United States rose by 3.2% in the 12 months ending August 2025, up from a 2.9% increase in July. The index measures grocery store prices, increased by 2.7% over the same period. The food away from home index, rose 3.9%. These clearly show that food prices have increased in the United States
