A young girl was born with a rare condition that left her with a misshapen ear. She wanted to get surgery to fix it, but there are very few doctors who specialize in this specific kind of surgery. Her and her family found someone that they trusted to do the surgery but when they asked their insurance company to help cover the bill they were denied. The company offered a list of new doctors who were within their network but all of them claimed that they do not perform the surgery. After complaints and the NBC news company reached out after covering their story, the insurance company said they would make a unique case and cover the bill after her family had already done all of the work to raise the funds they needed. The father even took funds out of his 401k which provided even more problems.
It is understood that insurance companies are becoming less and less "generous" when providing coverage for health issues and surgeries. Few have been denied in the past but it seems as of 2025 very few are being accepted. The insurance company is no longer responding to questions or other claims around the issue but aparently are reaching out to the specialist to add her to their "in-network" list.
