The Trump administration has been asserting that Christians in Nigeria are being targeted by Islamic militants. The Nigerian government rejects this as a misrepresentation and argued that terrorists kill anyone who does not agree with their violent agenda, no matter the religion. Nigeria already experiences violence and is in the midst of multiple crises, so it is not possible to follow what the causes of deaths of Christian victims are. The violence against Christians in Nigeria has been referred to by Senator Ted Cruz as persecution, not genocide. There is data that 100,000 Christians in Nigeria and 60,000 moderate Muslims were killed by jihadist groups since 2009. Boko Haram is one of the jihadist groups responsible for violence in Nigeria, infamous for kidnapping the Chibok girls in 2014. Trump has threatened to intervene in the midst of violence in Nigeria, asserting a desire to stop the persecution of Christians.
