Nancy Pelosi has announced her retirement from Congress after her current terms ends. This is after almost 40 years in her congressonal seat, starting in 1987. The now 87 year old is stepping down and fighting for a new way forward for Democratic leadership after the Midterm elections earlier this week.

Nancy Pelosi has announced her retirement in a video she has released. She will not be seeking reelection at the end of her term in 2027. There is no indication that ‘age’ was her motivating factor in choosing to retire. According to BBC, Nancy Pelosi, 85, had served in congress for 38 years. She was the first woman to serve as Speaker of the House from 2003 to 2023. According to a source in NBC news, her last focus was winning a yes on Proposition 50 in California, ultimately winning a yes. AP News states the decision was not entirely unexpected and left an impact amongst other politicians from the west coast to also step down for the next generation. Pelosi states, “My message to the city I love is this: San Francisco, know your power. We have made history. We have made progress. We have always led the way.” So while Nancy Pelosi’s decision to retire wasn’t purely influenced from age, she has confirmed that at the end of her current term, she will not be seeking re-election.

There is currently no attainable information that supports the claim that Nancy Pelosi is leaving Congress due to her age. It is true that Pelosi is leaving congress and retiring. Pelosi stated “I want you, my fellow San Franciscans, to be the first to know I will not be seeking re-election to Congress,” in a video from CNN where she announces her retirement. While it is true that Pelosi is on her last year, she never indicated that it was due to her age. It very well could be as she is 85 years old but there actually is no information on why she is retiring. In her video message and official statements, she didn’t cite health, political frustration, or family reasons — just that she looked forward to her final year “serving the city I love.” Bias from opposing political parties can show up to this claim and see it as true. CNN being left leaning towards Pelosi's party and possible beliefs could also show a bias. This claim is misleading because its stating a motive she hasn't stated.

Nancy Pelosi who was the first women to serve as speaker of the house, and represented a part of San Francisco in Congress for almost fourty years. Several sources including a video of Nancy Pelosi herself announcing her retirement determines that this is a truthful claim. She will serve till the end of her current term, and has not announced any future politcal endeavors. Pelosi was a highly praised member of the democratic party, and almost retired in 2016, but kept her positon after Donal Trump was elected. Nancy Pelosi led mutliple impeachments of Donald Trump, and played an essential role in the investigative commitee of the Jan. 6th roits. The orginal cliam states she is 87, when most resources say she is 85, and I struggled to find the direct quote with her reference to "a new way forward."

Some bias can be seen since it is a partisan report, and her collagues fondness might be shown by her parties members, but not the republicans.

This claim is not fully true, although Nancy Pelosi is stepping down from congress ate age 85, it is never stated that her age is the reason. According to BBC News, "In a video message on Thursday, Pelosi said she will not be seeking re-election to Congress at the end of her term in January 2027". This article never states or quotes any evidence that links Pelosi's age being the predominant factor of her retirement form Congress. BBC News is a reliable source and a division of the British Broadcasting Corporation that gathers and broadcasts news for the UK and the world. BBC quotes Pelosi multiple times throughout the article along with negative words from Trump. Another outlet that reports on Pelosi's retirement but does not directly state her age is the main factor is the New York Times. They directly tale a quote from a video Pelosi posted on the social media platform X. "With a grateful heart, I look forward to my final year of service as your proud representative". The New York Times also embedded a link into the article that takes you directly to the announcement.

Therefore the claim that Nancy Pelosi is leaving congress because of her age is not fully true. This can be backed by multiple sources including nationally recognized and read BBC News and New York Times.

Democratic congress member Nancy Pelosi is in fact retiring, but it is not due to her age of 85. This was announced in a video that Pelosi herself released. She will not be running in the reelection in 2026 after almost four decades in the San Francisco-based district. She has not yet announced her future plans. According to CNN, Pelosi is “the first and only female speaker of the US House of Representatives and one of the most powerful figures in Democratic politics for decades.” She has had a huge impact and will be missed greatly. There has recently been much speculation about her retirement after serving for 38 years, so her announcement was confirmation.

This is a misleading fact; although the part about Nancy Pelosi retiring is true, it has not been explicitly stated that it is because of her age. The website provided by CNN is valid, as CNN is a reputable news broadcasting network. (https://adfontesmedia.com/cnn-bias-and-reliability/) Based on the provided information, Nancy Pelosi has made it clear that she will not be going through reelection. That information is taken from a video Nancy Pelosi made in tribute to the city of San Francisco. However, Pelosi never explicitly stated that her retirement was due to her age. She had decided to retire two days after one of her greatest political victories throughout her 38-year-long congressional career. (https://www.cnn.com/2025/11/06/politics/nancy-pelosi-congress-retirement) One of the authors of this website, Sarah Ferris, works for CNN as a news reporter and specializes in writing for House leadership on Capitol Hill. So, the information provided is trustworthy and true. (https://www.cnn.com/profiles/sarah-ferris#about) Instead of concluding that the retirement is due to age, it could be because she feels that her work in Congress is done and that she has accomplished what she has wanted. On another website discussing this topic, it is stated that Pelosi said, “We have made history, we have made progress.” Therefore, inferring that she feels that she's accomplished all that she wished to while working for Congress, and again, is not saying anything about the age aspect. (https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/ce3xw3dw0zxo) In conclusion, the person who made the claim jumped to conclusions about why Pelosi has announced her retirement, and it is a misleading and untrue claim.
