Brian Kelly was just fired by LSU football amid an unsuccessful season. The contract he was given by LSU was slated for 10 years, 95 million dollars. With LSU firing him they have two options they could fire him with no cause or for performance based reasons, or they could fire him for a certain cause. He was fired for performance based reasons and therefore has the right to 90% of his contract which amounts to 54 million dollars.
With their being many specifications within the contract that are not disclosed to the public we don't know how the firing took place or what implications remain, but if they let him go with no cause then he has every right to sue the university and get the rest of the money he is owed based on how the contract was set up amongst when they hired him. The athletic director there was a guy named Scott Woodward, who has since been relieved of his duties. According to the filing, LSU's representatives told Kelly's team that Woodward did not have "the authority to terminate Coach Kelly and/or make settlement offers to him" in October, meaning Kelly technically was not terminated, ESPN reported.
