Captain Hilary Knight : “Even if the White House offered to send a military plane to pick us up, we would refuse without hesitation.”

The insult *invitation* was an afterthought, their treatment less than

Trump & the GOP don’t care about “protecting women’s sports”

This claim is false. The original Bluesky link seems to lead to a deleted post, but searching the Bluesky handle "thetnholler.bsky.social" on google followed by the last part of the link "3mfoshtff2222" leads to a result that, although also leading to a deleted post, is captioned: "This seems like an AI video. Why would she be doing that interview in her jersey? Also the cadence is weird". This leads to the conclusion that Hilary Knights statement, "even if the White House offered to send a military plane to pick us up, we would refuse without hesitation" originated from a video (A TikTok video shows the clip here, but it is unclear if this is the original upload) of Knight that is believed to be AI. This clip has circulated (and also since been deleted) on multiple social media platforms, including the now deleted Bluesky post from The Tennessee Holler. The voiceover has signs of AI use, such as "voice cloning flaws" like lack of natural pauses and flat tones, and websites such as Snopes have stated that they believe the video of Knight is AI.

While the original post/statement linked is very likely to be AI, Knight has made an actual response to Trumps comment about the women's hockey team twice. During an interview at the Space Needle alongside other Women's Hockey Team members, Knight says that she believes that "the joke was distasteful and unfortunate", but that this moment can be used to shed light on how women should also be recognized for their achievements. On a SportsCenter interview for ESPN, she states that rather than focusing on the comment, the team is going to use the time to focus on celebrating both teams winning the gold medal in the Olympics. These two interviews are reliable evidence of Knights actual statement on the matter, with both of them being interviews corroborated by multiple news outlets, and one being a live, recorded interview in Seattle. As for the refusal of the Whitehouse invitation itself, an article by NBC News reports that the US Women's Hockey Team did decline, but that it was "due to the timing and previously scheduled academic and professional commitments".

This claim is false. This article claims that Hilary Knight said the US womens hockey team would refuse transporation to the White House. However the website reporting is not a major national news source or website. So the claim has chance to be false at just that. Looking at where the information originally came from, the reporting is based on interviews and statements from Knight and coverage by sports journalists following the team. Knight is the captain of the U.S. women’s national hockey team and has been a major figure in the program for many years, so she is a primary source with direct knowledge of the situation. But the more reliable coverage shows that her comments were more about criticizing a joke or remark rather than announcing a boycott. Because of that, the article’s claim is misleading or false.

In investigating the claim from Bluesea Titan, they stated that Hilary Knight from the Women’s Olympic hockey team said, “Even if the White House offered to send a military plane to pick us up, we would refuse without hesitation.” This claim is false. I think this user just made a post without doing any proper research and maybe just wanting to spark controversy. When I searched up Hilary Knight saying that statement it came up with a bunch of facebook posts and a few from tiktok or instagram. When clicking on these links all of the posts were removed or taken down, so there isn’t any written or recorded record of her saying this. This content is very recent and Bluesea Titan is not a known author of anything.

For my primary sources, I found information from Oregon Live, NBC News, and USA Today. I reviewed the statement made in the post and didn’t find it anywhere. Whereas from these sources they are telling a different story. For example, "We are sincerely grateful for the invitation extended to our gold medal–winning U.S. Women’s Hockey Team and deeply appreciate the recognition of their extraordinary achievement," a USA Hockey spokesperson said. "Due to the timing and previously scheduled academic and professional commitments following the Games, the athletes are unable to participate," from NBC News. As in USA Today and Oregon Live they had the same statement. The women's team was very appreciative of the offer to go to the White House from President Trump but they nicely declined it because it conflicted with their professional (PWHL) season and others college (NCAA) seasons. All of these sources got their information from the players firsthand and their interests seem to just share their thoughts and not try to create a bad narrative. With the claim being false it seems that Bluesea Titan didn’t do their research or just blindly threw out a claim without thinking and tried to spark controversy.

This viral claim is based on a fabricated AI video rather than a real interview. While the original social media posts have largely been deleted, digital archives show the video uses a cloned version of Hilary Knight's voice. The audio’s flat tone and unnatural pacing, combined with the suspicious context of Knight wearing a jersey for a high-level political statement, identify it as a deepfake. Major fact-checkers have debunked the video as a complete invention.

Although Knight is a credible primary source as the team captain, her actual comments focused on addressing a specific grievance rather than refusing transportation to the White House. Reliable media coverage contradicts the "boycott" claim, and the fact that this news is isolated to non-major outlets points to it being inaccurate or sensationalized.

After investigating this claim I have concluded that it is false. The source is unreliable and the link no longer works. It seems this could possibly be AI or taken out of context. There are no straight forward sources reporting on this statement. Most posts about this are personal posts on social media that have no credible sources or big news outlets. When searching up this remark mostly, Tik Tok, Facebook and Threads pop up. ESPN says that she said the comment was "distasteful" but has no mention of anything else.
