MOD - “Russia has suffered 1,250,000 casualties” and Zelensky says Ukraine has lost 55,000dead over 4 years.
I find those figures impossible to believe but if true then our sympathies should of course be with Putin and the Russian people dealing with an aggressive NATO- backed  regime.

First looking at the account that claimed this, they seem to be an actual person, but politically they seem to align pretty heavily with the data that they are claiming. Their bio reads, “Anti-establishment. Pro democracy from the grass roots. Scottish independence. Anti-NATO”, which to me, seems to be a genuine stance from a real person, rather than either a bot or someone who is grifting.

With this, we can look for a couple different sources to see what some unbiased sources would say about the casualties. I chose three: PBS, Aljazeera, and an article from the Russian Ministry of Finance. The post claims that the information is from the Russian Ministry of Defence, which would make it a little bit biased, so the goal here is to see if these news organizations got similar figures from their sources.

The estimations of Ukrainian and Russian casualties in the war, all with about a four year time frame, are as follows:

Pbs: “It estimated that Russia suffered 1.2 million casualties, including up to 325,000 troop deaths”

“Ukraine has seen 500,000 to 600,000 military casualties, including up to 140,000 deaths”

Aljazeera: “Russia had suffered 1.2 million casualties, including at least 325,000 deaths”

“Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy earlier this month said 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed in the entire war”

“CSIS estimated Ukraine had suffered up to 600,000 casualties, with as many as 140,000 death”

Russian MOF: Claims 1,274,990 “losses” in “Dynamics of losses of the Russian army”

It is important to distinguish casualties and deaths, as casualties can be injuries from battle, but it seems that all three of these line up pretty well. The first two both cite the Center for Strategic International Study, so it makes sense that their numbers are so similar. The only thing that was confusing was that Aljazeera quoted Zelenskyy saying a number of deaths nearly a third of what was estimated, which makes me think that either the number is being downplayed to exaggerate the success of the Ukrainian army, or the estimation done by the CSIS is far too high. I would likely believe that the latter is true, but it is not enough for me to label this as misleading. So, evidently, this claim is true.

The claim that Russia has lost 1,250,000 casualties and Ukraine has lost 55,000 soldiers is based on a social media post from Bluesky, which is not an official source. Social media posts may include opinions and incomplete facts. According to other reports, such as The Straits Times, Ukrainian President V was quoted in an interview on French TV, where he stated that “Ukraine has lost around 55,000 soldiers killed on the battlefield”  since Russia's full-scale invasion began in 2022. Another source, the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), analyzed the war and found that “Russia may have lost around 1.2 million soldiers, including those killed, wounded, and missing, during the war.” It is difficult to verify the accuracy of these numbers, considering it is wartime and both countries may be restricting the flow of such sensitive information. Although the numbers may be true, it should be noted that they are approximations rather than exact numbers.
