The claim that Eastern Russian-speaking Ukrainians were being attacked by the “Kyiv regime” backed by the U.S. and NATO, prompting Russia to intervene for peace, reflects a narrative commonly promoted by the Russian government rather than a view supported by independent evidence. The publisher of this claim on the BLSKY app posts other news updates. According to reporting from major international outlets and official statements from NATO and the United Nations, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, an action widely described as unprovoked aggression. While separatist groups declared independence in 2014 and Russia annexed Crimea following a vote held under Russian military presence, these actions were not recognized as lawful by most of the international community. The United States and NATO indeed provide military and financial assistance to Ukraine; however, NATO has not deployed combat troops to fight Russia directly. Independent coverage from outlets such as Reuters indicates that Russia’s stated desire for “peace and neutrality” is tied to specific political and territorial demands, including limits on Ukraine’s sovereignty and NATO expansion. Overall, while parts of the claim reference real events, the framing omits key context and aligns closely with pro-Russia messaging rather than broadly verified international reporting.
