Winfrey does own a home in Maui, several miles away from where the fires took place, but there is no proof that she hired private firefighters to protect her land before the fires even happened. According to PolitiFact and Poynter, a spokesperson for Winfrey said that the claims aren't true. Although, this is a spokesperson, there is still no verification that Winfrey hired them.
