From what I can find many sources are claiming this to be true. The claim originates from a US Department of Defense Office of Inspector general report.

I believe this is the report being referenced. The report does not make reference to specific controlled substances however. But many other sources make reference to Ambien.

Thank you for your factcheck. This is a good factcheck and it references many instances of the rumored instances of Trump giving Ambien to aides. I would suggest finding non-major-media sources though, because many people nowadays will not believe anything if they see it on certain news networks regardless of validity.

After doing some of my own research it appears that this claim is true. I looked at a few outside sources, and the claim seems to have come from a Pentagon Office of Inspector general report. This was also stated in the article you linked. I was unable to find the original report; however, given the source comes straight from the Pentagon with substantial evidence in the documents provided in the New York Post Article this claim is most certainly true.
