This claim is true, Donald Trump did defend his remark where he said there will be a "bloodbath" if he does not win the 2024 presidential election. In this WSJ article, and the one linked in the question from NYT, Donald Trump attested that he did not mean to provoke "fake news media" with this quote and that he meant  he was "was simply referring to imports allowed by Crooked Joe Biden, which are killing the automobile industry."

This is not misinformation.
