On October 13, 2024, the Pentagon announced the deployment of approximately 100 U.S. troops and the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile defense system to Israel. This is the first U.S. troop deployment to Israel since the Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023. Ordered by President Biden, the deployment aims to bolster Israel's defenses against missile threats, particularly from Iran. The THAAD system will enhance protection for Israeli cities and military sites, reaffirming U.S. commitment to Israel’s security.

The Department of Defense has commented on this, saying they are sending a missile defense system and personnel to operate it. The DoD clearly states the motives of this decision as a defensive measure to protect Americans in Israel and the defense of Israel as a whole. This should not be misconstrued as American soldiers participating in any offensive measures against Iran—the motive of Sec. Def. Austin's decision is solely to support Israeli defense measures. In fact, according to the articles listed below, this is already in effect.
