Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance and various right-wing figures have spread erroneous claims on social media that Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio are abducting and eating pets.

When asked by an audience member if he believed the pet-eating claims, Trump said “All I do is report." He later went on to state that the migrant community in Springfield is “eating other things too that they’re not supposed to be” (CNN). 

There is no evidence that Haitian Immigrants in Springfield eat pets. This is a baseless claim that has been used as an insult towards Haitian Immigrants for years. According to Florida State Rep Marie Woodson, this stereotype has been circulated since her youth in the 1980s. "When I came here, I know there was one kid who used to go to Edison Senior High School, who had some issues with other kids calling him Haitian-eating cats," (CBS News Miami).
