The US Supreme Court's Chevron Doctrine was responsible for 40 years of standardizing regulations protecting public health, public safety, and the environment (https://www.nrdc.org/stories/what-happens-if-supreme-court-ends-chevron-deference).

After the Trump administration overturned Chevron in June of 2024, there has been a significant rise in foodborne illnesses, such as listeria, nationwide (https://www.foodsafetynews.com/2024/07/whats-chevron-got-to-do-with-food-safety/) (https://www.washingtonpost.com/food/2024/10/17/food-safety-confidence-science/).

I was curious if the overturning of Chevron and the rise of listeria had a causual relationship, and it appears some Reddit users are speculating that this is precisely the case. While the Reddit thread (linked below) displays strong opinions, it lacks credible sources to support its claims. The post is recent, but users are anonymous, so I cannot find the authors on LinkedIn.

What do you think? Is there enough evidence to announce that the rise in foodborne illnesses directly relates to the Trump administration's decisions and Chevron's overturning?

Well, for starters, I am not sure how the Trump administration would make these changes and sign off on the overturning of Chevron in June of 2024 if he had not been in office since January of 2020. Also, none of the sources you selected talk about the Trump Administration making any changes. Nor did you describe anything about the overturning. I am curious as to how this falls into the hands of Trump. The National Library of Medicine states that foodborne illnesses come from improperly handling and cooking of food. I linked my source down below. Your headline is completely misleading.

Trump is tied to the Chevron ruling because he appointed several of the judges who made the call. "Trump appointed three of the justices who signed on to upend a ruling loathed on the right that gave deference to federal agencies to interpret ambiguous laws." https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/supreme-court/supreme-courts-overturning-40-year-chevron-ruling-win-trump-deregulato-rcna159589

Nevertheless, it may be a stretch to say Trump is directly to blame for the foodborne illnesses without further evidence.
