The NYT headline claiming "there have been 3 mass shooting in the U.S. this year" on Sept. 4 is false.

This claim appears to be true. I found that an article by the BBC(sourced by the Gun Violence Archive) states that there have been 385 mass shootings in the US as of September 5, 2024, which is much larger than the supposed NYT claim.

A "mass shooting" is defined as "an event in which one or more individuals are actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a populated area." by the FBI. There is no given minimum number of casualties for an event to be defined as a mass shooting, which some people or news sources choose to do themselves.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, there has been 445 mass shootings in the USA so far this year as of the day of this posting. The NYT headline is incorrect.
