Question

The article "The HOAX of Climate Change" calls it a political scam. Some scientists avoided the data and tried to shut down opposing views, referencing the 2009 "Climategate" controversy. It also said any warming we're seeing is just part of natural solar cycles and not because of human actions. Those claims are false because several investigations have exonerated the scientists behind those accusations, and temperature records from NASA and NOAA plainly show that the planet has been steadily warming, due mostly to human-caused greenhouse gas emissions, not solar activity.

I agree with your response, however I am wondering where you got your information about the investigations that have exonerated these scientists? I agree with you. I think that humans and other animals cause climate change. NASA specifically responded to this saying that "Scientific evidence continues to show that human activities (primarily the human burning of fossil fuels) have warmed Earth’s surface and its ocean basins, which in turn have continued to impact Earth’s climate. This is based on over a century of scientific evidence forming the structural backbone of today’s civilization." NASA is a reliable site as they have proof of climate change, and it is happening not only from the view of Earth but also in space and around the planet. The Environmental Protection Agency wrote about it as well talking about how it is caused by humans greenhouse gasses and other environmentally harmful substances, specifically "it is extremely likely (> 95%) that human activities have been the dominant cause of that warming." This site is reliable as it is a government website. Although many people think it's not real, graphs and studies done by scientists have proven that wrong.

The scientific data of changes in our oceans brought on by rising greenhouse gasses contradicts the claim that "climate change is a hoax." According to a NASA study, the ocean absorbs around 90% of the excess heat from global warming, which has caused sea levels to rise by more than 4 inches since 1992 and marine heat waves to become more intense. Two effects of the warmer water are ocean acidification, which damages marine ecosystems, and bigger hurricanes. Also, the thinning of sea ice brought on by rising air and ocean temperatures speeds up warming even further by reducing the amount of sunlight reflected back into space. These measured changes in ocean conditions prove the reality of climate change and its ongoing effects on our world.

This is a very well-written answer. I like that you provided various examples of how climate change is directly impacting the world and what that has looked like over time. Yes I completely agree, the author made it seem that the purpose for the news and attention around climate change was created for the benefit of politicians which doesn't make sense. I also did find it strange that this article was written in 2022 and it's main argument was relying on a scandal from over a decade ago. I completely agree, I found the article referenced in the original post completely unreliable for many reasons. I agree that opinion pieces hold less weight in a conversation of science, where the data is readily available by a simple search and presented by extremely reliable sources (NASA, NOAA). I also agree with your argument that the article is out-dated, I think that's an excellent aspect to point out. The only reference of "evidence" in the C.J. Cook article is from a scandal from 2009 that I couldn't even find the actual Emails from. Regardless of the emails, quoting a source from 2009 in a statement about an issue that increases in severity over time is not good evidence.

This is a letter to the editor and an opinion piece. Nonetheless, it is false because the author denies all scientific knowledge that supports the theory of climate change (which has been emerging for the last several decades) and does not provide an opinion on the matter, but simply disregards the facts and don't back up their own. They attribute everything to natural cycles of warming and cooling caused by the sun. While it is true there are natural cycles of warming and these cycles do affect atmospheric temperature, it is not the only thing that can affect heating and cooling of the Earth---here the author is creating a false dichotomy.

Then as we read, the author accuses the United Nations, a highly trusted international organization of silencing scientists challenging the IPCC assessment reports but does not name a single scientist. Figures and studies can be found from several sources and organizations whose sole purpose is to study the environment. As well as some without any moneyed interests. You did a good job at using a credible source to back up your claim. I also think that it is noteworthy that you mentioned other reliable sources have also agreed that climate change is scientifically proven. Next time, I would suggest adding a few more links to specific sources to strengthen your claim.

After doing some research of my own, I found that climate change is very much real. According to dnv.com, 97% of climate scientists agree that the rising temperatures are due to human activity.
