From what I've read from the Sleep Foundation napping can help relieve symptoms of fatigue, but missed sleep or "Sleep debt" takes longer to to recover from depending how many cumulative hours have been lost. To actually recover sleep and return the brain to its optimal function it's been found that you need at least 10 days. So no, napping during the day does not catch you up on lost sleep. Although it may give you a boost of energy or clearer cognitive function, the cumulative amount of lost sleep will not be lessened and improved brain function is only temporary from napping or sleeping in.

This is very interesting as most people think wouldnt really make sense but I also want to add on by saying that REM sleep is the important sleep that makes you feel well rested here an article about it https://www.healthline.com/health/how-much-deep-sleep-do-you-need
