This claim may be true but may be exaggerated. Later in the article you linked, it mentions the view of John Reade, a senior market strategist for the World Gold Council. Reade said that it would be more reasonable to believe the estimate of 300 metric tons, rather than the projected 1,000 metric tons, since deeper deposits are "rare and hard to develop." I'm also a little skeptical about the source of the claim since the news was originally reported in Chinese state media, as you said. They have an incentive to exaggerate or choose the higher estimate.

At this point, I think it's too early to tell whether this claim is true until we get independent verification and a more detailed estimate than the current projection.

The lead of this story is focused on skepticism with it, saying 300 would be a more reasonable number. There has been no reporting on this from a super trustworthy source or government office. I am inclined to say the skeptics are more likely to be correct but at this time I don't think we can make a true claim on this.
