The claim that Trump says he pulled back his DEA pick, while the DEA pick claimed it was his choice to withdraw, is true. U.S. President Donald Trump and Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister have provided separate and differing accounts regarding Chronister's withdrawal from consideration to run the DEA. FOX 9 reports that on December 3, 2024 Sheriff Chronister announced his withdrawal. He was cast in a positive light and his commitment to his current role as Sheriff of Hillsborough County was highlighted. Contrarily, FOX 13 reported that President Trump stated that he decided to withdraw Chronister's nomination. He spoke out in concern about comments Chronister had made, stating: "I pulled him out, because I did not like what he said to my pastors and other supporters," on Truth Social, his social media website.
