I agree with this claim to an extent, the source provided has good details to support that sports help increase mental well-being. Being in any sport has many benefits such as boosting your mood, great way to be active on a daily basis, builds communication and social skills, and much more. However, I feel that this claim should also list the drawbacks as many people need to be aware that it can cause serious injuries or bring down your mental health like affecting your self-esteem. Could lead to comparing themselves with others which could push themselves to do more but can cause damage mentally, physically, or even within their overall lifestyle. In the end, sports can affect anyone in anyway so have a balance within this claim to not only make it stronger but less one sided.

I totally agree with this claim and so the facts. Those who are physically active, whether it be for competitive sports or simply for exercise or fun, people who participate in sports are proven to have better mental health. In an article written by the American Psychiatric Association, it is said that physical activity has been proven to reduce depression and be a form of treatment for those with mental health struggles. This is just one source that supports this claim, but there are many out there that back up the idea that sports benefit mental health.

As an athlete that has been involved in team sports for a large part of my life, having a sport does cause a difference in mental health. I say "difference" because, thought the positives are prevalent with team based sports, there are negative sides to sports. I read through the link provided and noticed that it was a broad database of information that revolves around answering the question between sports and mental health. Now the information that was provided was well backed and credible, I wanted to go further detail with a source I found personally. After cross analyzing, I noticed that information from both sources provided similar information and noticed the potential discrepancy in mental health as the overall level of the sport and ages increased.

This claim is true.

According to an article from the National Library of Medicine, physical activity does improve mental health. Humans produce neurochemicals when engaging in physical activity and “manufacture opioids and endocannabinoids that are linked to pleasure, anxiolytic effects, sleepiness, and reduced pain sensitivity.” Engaging in physical activity “can improve attention, focus, memory, cognition, language fluency, and decision-making for up to two hours” and “improves the functioning of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, lowering cortisol secretion and restoring the balance of leptin and ghrelin.” This article shows studies conducted all across the globe. Physical activity can also improve some psychotic symptoms and help with the treatment of medical comorbidities.

Something significant to note is that the article explains that “studies show that people who exercise regularly have a better frame of mind. However, it should be highlighted that a consistent link between mood enhancement and exercise in healthy individuals has not been established.” This is important to bring up because it explains that while there is short-term improvement, the long-term effects have yet to be presented.

Being active and participating in sports is a strongly supported way to improve both physical and mental health. Research from Newport Academy has shown that exercise influences serotonin levels, which contribute to improved mood, and triggers endorphin release, which helps reduce the stress hormone cortisol. And a study conducted at Duke University found that the mental health benefits of exercise lasted longer than those of antidepressants. Additionally, research published in peer-reviewed journals, including Biomed Central, supports the claim that physical activity significantly enhances mental well-being. Given this evidence, the claim that 'participating in sports can greatly increase mental well-being’ is valid and widely supported by scientists and health professionals.

This claim is completely true. Sports do in fact create better mental health, friendships and release stress. "Physical activity raises the level of natural chemicals in the brain that affect emotional regulation and mood." , "Team sports improve interpersonal resources such as empathy, confidence, and responsibility." Exercise positively impacts levels of serotonin, a chemical that helps regulate mental health, and stimulates the neurotransmitter norepinephrine, which improves mood.". The fact is that sports do increase your overall well being and they have many other positive impacts to our bodies.

It has been proven time and time again that sports are very beneficial in many different aspects including reducing stress and improving social skills. According to an article from Harvard titled “Exercising to Relax” “ It has a unique capacity to exhilarate and relax, to provide stimulation and calm, to counter depression and dissipate stress. It's a common experience among endurance athletes and has been verified in clinical trials… The mental benefits of aerobic exercise have a neurochemical basis. Exercise reduces levels of the body's stress hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol. It also stimulates the production of endorphins, chemicals in the brain that are the body's natural painkillers and mood elevators.” This article is filled with information supporting the claim that sports help reduce stress. In an article from the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity mentioned social health benefits have been reported with the most common being improved self esteem which helps social skills and helps kids be more confident, social interaction and fewer depressive symptoms. Improved self esteem can lead to more easily creating friendships for example on the team.

This is true, both scientifically and mentally. It has been mentioned in PMC that the influence of physical activity on mood is profound and multi-dimensional. Through the release of neurotransmitters and endorphins, exercise can directly boost mood and counteract the symptoms of mood disorders. Furthermore, the social and self-esteem benefits of engaging in sports provide additional layers of emotional support. These findings emphasize the importance of incorporating regular physical activity as a strategy for maintaining and enhancing mental health. If I refer back to my personal experience, I can say that my life turned around when I started going to the gym and boxing consistently. It definitely improved my mental health. While it can be tough at the beginning when exercising isn't part of your daily routine, the outcome is absolutely worth it.

This claim is, while a bit opinionated and exaggerated, true. Playing sports can indeed increase mental health and well-being. Many doctors have shown that physical activity can improve mental health. The president of the American Psychiatric Association emphasised the importance of physical activity on a person's mental health, and playing sports can make physical activity more fun and rewarding. While playing sports on a professional level can negatively impact mental health by creating a negative self-image or competitive mindset, playing a sport in itself will most likely lead to improvements in mental well-being.
