The claim that tattoos can have mental health benefits beyond aesthetic appeal is supported by emerging psychological research. The article references a study published in the Journal of Psychological Science, which found that people who received tattoos often reported a greater sense of control and improved self-esteem following their ink sessions (Psychological Science). Additionally, a review in the International Journal of Dermatology highlighted that tattoos can serve as therapeutic tools for trauma survivors, allowing them to reclaim their bodies and reduce symptoms of PTSD (IJD Review). Experts like Dr. Viren Swami, a social psychologist from Anglia Ruskin University, have conducted studies showing that tattoos can enhance body image and help individuals form stronger identities, particularly after experiences of emotional distress (Swami Study).

The claim that tattoos have effects outside of their aesthetic appeal and can provide benefits can be supported by psychological research. After conducting my own research, and reviewing the articles presented in this claim, it is more clear the types of effects it can have on the person psychologically. One article I came across was from Dr. Viren Swamy, and he stated that "Results showed that both women and men had significantly lower appearance anxiety and dissatisfaction immediately after obtaining their tattoo, and significantly higher body appreciation, distinctive appearance investment, self-ascribed uniqueness, and self-esteem after three weeks." Another article that I came across was from World Journal Of Psychiatry which stated "However, a substantial minority did report that having a tattoo made them feel more sexy (33%), attractive (32%), and rebellious (27%). Tattoos therefore seem to have the ability to positively impact one’s sense of self, with individual variation and many aspects of identity potentially affected." Those with tattoos not only like the visual appeal, but also the confidence it provides. It can allow those with ptsd and trauma to reclaim their ownership of the incident and face it in new ways.

This article, written by David Robson of the Guardian, discusses the history and significance of tattoo body art and how tattoos have upheld deeper cultural meanings across many continents, artists, and recipients. The article references a study completed by Viren Swami of ScienceDirect, in which 82 individuals who had received a tattoo felt satisfied after receiving it. Additionally, the article quotes Professor Susan Cadell of the University of Waterloo, who has interviewed a number of people use tattoos in the grieving process. I believe this claim to be true as getting a tattoo is a subjective experience and can heal the mind by mere pleasure or as a response in times of distress. Given my research and the purpose of the article, there is nothing malicious or misinformed about what the author is presenting.

This headline stems from an article published by The Guardian in 2021. This article jumps around about benefits and risks of getting tattoos and people in history who have or have not have marked skin. There is little actual scientific evidence that having a tattoo makes you any different from people without. This article follows Professor Viren Swami and his opinions on different theories and opinions surrounding tattoos. Swami talks about studies he has been conducting through the past decade. He follows this up with the statement "In statistical terms, they are negligible". This article follows Swamis opinions and no factual evidence.

Looking at this article and seeing how they're talking about it being more of an idea of self actualization and relief through expression, I can definitely see where they are coming from in this article and I believe this to be true. I linked an article confirming this, showing studies that tattoos can lead to decreased anxiety and can have various mental benefits.

I agree with the claim that tattoos can help heal the mind. An article by the Psychology Today, titled “Can Tattoos Heal?” and not just in a literal sense of the word, in the phycological world. The article is an interview with a man named Paul Booth, a tattoo artist, and Booth says that “survival, the endurance of pain, and ultimately an image that represents that experience as part of your past is what heals. In the [tattoo] result you feel empowered because you suffered through it, and you survived.” Booth relates the experience to being able to close a part of your past up because of a tattoo, which comes off to the person receiving it as a therapeutic experience and allows the person to constantly be reminded of that change they made in their life to receive that tattoo. From Booth’s words and the article by Psychology Today, I can full heartedly believe that tattoos help to heal people.

I also believe the claim that tattoos have mental health benefits beyond aesthetic appeal is true and valid. The Guardian article that was provided references fairly credible research, including a study that was published in Psychological Science and a review in the International Journal of Dermatology, both suggesting tattoos can help improve self-esteem and reduce symptoms of PTSD. I also found more confirmation through other reliable sources. An article from Yahoo Entertainment discusses how tattoos can promote self healing and self-empowerment in addition and an article from Psychology Today outlines 5 ways that tattoos can help individuals heal emotionally while emphasizing body reclamation and improving their self image. Another source I found was from the National Library of Medicine and they also support the claim itself by explaining how tattoos can decrease appearance anxiety and increase self-esteem over time. All of these sources confirm that tattoos can heal the mind as well as adorn the body.

There's actually evidence that having a tattoo is beneficial to one's mental health. A study done for the World Journal of Psychiatry actually points out that having tattoos can be a sort of psychological window into what kind of person someone is. For a lot of people, a tattoo is a way of telling a personal story displayed on the human body, and many groups be they military, a member of a group or tribe, or just a random person reflects this. Rarely does someone end up getting a tattoo against their will, so having one is generally a sign of someone having a sound mind and strong conviction.

To add onto the validity of this claim, I found that a writer named Korina Miller had covered not only Dr. Viren Swami's research but also obtained information from Jennifer Carter, a psychologist at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. She claims in this article that “serious illnesses can devastate one’s body and physical function [and] tattoos can symbolize claiming one’s body back from the illness," further adding, “tattoos can signify strength and survival, reminders of a battle.” This closely mirrors the process of dealing with grief, where individuals reclaim their loss by commemorating a loved one with a tattoo. This idea was echoed by a Brooklyn tattoo artist, Lalo Yunda who, on numerous occasions, helped people experience this form of healing. In one instance, he expressed that “it was definitely closing the circle for him," illustrating how tattoos can offer a sense of closure, empowerment, and emotional restoration after profound loss or trauma. Additionally, I found in some research covered by Rice Business School that  having tattooed employees can make your company look better. Their research shows an obvious shift in the way people think of tattoos and go on to say "For any company, creativity is important to grow as a business and foster innovation. And because customers tend to see the people a business hires as reflective of the brand, an employee with tattoos might lend credibility to a business with an artsy or edgy brand." The shift in our cultural acceptance and research of tattoo appreciation in creative work spaces can further highlight having–and getting–tattoos can ease/help one's mental health

Research indicates that individuals often experience positive changes in self-perception after getting a tattoo. A study published in the Journal of Psychological Science found that participants reported increased self esteem and a greater sense of control following their tattoo sessions. These effects were observed shortly after the procedure and persisted over time.

Additionally, tattoos can serve as therapeutic tools for trauma survivors. A review in the International Journal of Dermatology highlighted that tattoos can help individuals reclaim their bodies and reduce symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This process allows for personal expression and healing, transforming negative experiences into symbols of strength and resilience.

The claim that tattoos can heal the mind as well as adorn the body is shown through a TED talk "The healing power of tattoos" by David Allen. David mentions how through his work he has realized how powerful tattoos can be for someone. Tattoos tell a story and help people heal from trauma. More specifically David works with breast cancer survivors after mastectomies. He describes how tattooing is more than art, it's a form of healing and empowerment. David emphasizes the emotional and psychological strength clients gain when they use tattoos to turn scars into something beautiful and personal.
