I think it’s important to take someone’s beliefs into account when looking at their behavior, but there’s a point where that shifts from a journalistic discussion to a philosophical or conceptual one. For example, I could say members of the Democratic Party are demons—but without any shared understanding of what a “demon” actually is, there’s no real way to prove or disprove it. Sure, plenty of people believe demons exist, but without a way to verify or measure that, we can’t say for sure. Still, knowing that someone believes Democrats are demons can tell us something useful about their perspective—their credibility, biases, and politics.
