Construction workers using heavy machinery on Monday ripped the face off the East Wing, historically the domain of the first lady. The work is part of one of the largest renovation projects in decades at the White House: the building of President Trump’s 90,000-square-foot ballroom, whose cost he has put at $250 million.

This claim is true. The original article linked is from the New York Times, which is a credible source. In this specific NYT article, published Oct. 20, 2025, there is even a video of the demolition of the East Wing. (https://www.nytimes.com/2025/10/20/us/politics/trump-white-house-east-wing-demolition-ballroom.html).

https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefings-statements/2025/07/the-white-house-announces-white-house-ballroom-construction-to-begin/

On the official White House website, it’s cited that the reason for building the new ballroom is because the White House is “unable to host major functions honoring world leaders and other countries without having to install a large and unsightly tent approximately 100 yards away from the main building entrance”

Trump and other “patriot donors” have contributed to the approximately $200 million project. The ballroom is expected to be finished before the end of Trump’s presidential term. According to the website, the “theme and architectural heritage” of the new ballroom will be “almost identical” to the original White House.

The White House Chief of Staff stated, “‘The President and the Trump White House are fully committed to working with the appropriate organizations to [preserve] the special history of the White House while building a beautiful ballroom that can be enjoyed by future Administrations and generations of Americans to come.’”

The East Wing is also mentioned, and it’s described as “small, heavily changed, and reconstructed,” which implies that it does not have much historical significance.

This is true, from an NPR article from October 20th, 2025, demolition has begun on the eastern wing of the White House in preparation for the construction of the ballroom. Pictures clearly show excavators tearing the walls of the eastern wing down. The ballroom however, is now slated to have a 999 person occupancy compared to the 650 seated person occupancy from the announcement in July. This all comes without approval from the National Capital Planning Commission; the commission is in charge of approving construction and renovation work to government buildings in the DC area.

This statement is true based on many news outlets and announcements from the Whitehouse as well. Trump is creating a ballroom on the east wing of the white house which he claims has been wanted for up to 100 years. The project broke ground this week and will be fully funded by Trump and anonymous donors.

“A demolition job that began Monday with the disappearance of the White House’s eastern entrance advanced Tuesday with the destruction of much of the East Wing, according to a photograph obtained by The Washington Post and two people who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe the scene.”

MSNBC, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and many other outlets have confirmed this all with varying opinions on the new addition. The whitehouse.gov posted an article defending the new addition through showing previous additions through the years. At the top of the article it is stated that “a bold, necessary addition that echoes the storied history of improvements and additions from commanders-in-chief to keep the executive residence as a beacon of American excellence.” I can say with confidence that this statement is true and there are many opinions on whether the addition is appropriate or not.

This claim is true. According to many different sources, the East Wing of the White House has started to be demolished by construction vehicles. There are videos going around of the process of the demolition and according to a live stream from ABC News, it is currently underway. The president has stated that the ballroom is planned to be built where the East Wing resides. It is estimated to be 90,000 square feet and is will have a seating capacity of 999 persons.

A live stream from ABC News is currently filming the demolition. This shows that the East wing is being taken down in current time.  Video Construction crews begin demolition on the East Wing of the White House | Watch Live News on ABCNL

NBC's Today reported on this project. During this video, it shows segments of the president addressing the status of the project. It also provides information that this project is being privately funded.  Crews Begin Tearing Down WH East Wing for Trump Ballroom

AP News provided an article, including many details of this project. The information on the size and seating capacity came from this article.  White House starts East Wing demolition for Trump's ballroom | AP News

Each source might have biases based on their political views and their opinion of the current presidential administration. But the evidence of this event seems to be pretty straight to the point, that being that the East Wing of the white house is being torn down to make room for a new ballroom. each source may provide their opinion on the matter and have influences that way.

The video of the demolition, the live stream, and the article from AP news all support the claim. They provide photos and information that align with one another and all support each other.

None seem to undermine the claim.

The statement that this article is making is sure to be true because the article provides video footage of a construction vehicle tearing down the walls of the east wing along with a public statement from Donald Trump saying that the new ballroom will be able to hold 999 people instead of the 88 people that the current ballroom holds. As for the claims of a desired larger ballroom from past presidents, the official statement from the White House states that "for 150 years, Presidents, Administrations, and White House Staff have longed for a large event space on the White House complex that can hold substantially more guests than currently allowed." This claim is hard to quantify due to the lack of evidence or elaboration for such from the white house. The details of the new ballroom being a total of 90,000-square-feet with a cost of $200 million to build are official statements from the white house.

This is true, from a CNBC article on October 22nd, 2025, the entire East Wing of the White House will be demolished to give room to President Trump's massive ballroom. Three months prior, Trump promised the East Wing structure would not be touched to build a ballroom and that it would be built next to the East Wing, not touching it, but "plans changed," White House officials told CNBC. Many people have shared their anger over the construction, but White House officials explain it's a necessary addition.

The ballroom is being privately funded by many, including large American companies and Trump himself. The tech company, Alphabet, is contributing $22 million to help build the ballroom, reaching nearly 10% of the estimated cost. Others like Lockheed Martin, R.J. Reynolds, Booz Allen Hamilton, Palantir, and NextEra Energy also spoke out about donating to the ballroom.

This claim is true, Trump is tearing down part of the white house in order to build his own ballroom. This is cited in the article this claim is made from, a New York Times article, which is reliable source. https://www.nytimes.com/live/2025/10/20/us/trump-news#trump-white-house-east-wing-demolition-ballroom The cost of this massive protect is expected to be over $250 million. This demolition is not only one of the most expensive, but also one of the largest renovations done on the white house in decades. This article also includes a video in which shows construction workings tearing down part of the white house that will be expanded and remodeled into Trump's ballroom.

An article from PBS also shows multiple photos of the recent demolition. The construction for this project began on Monday "despite lacking approval for construction from the federal agency that oversees such projects." PBS writes. Despite not having official approval, Trump have begun the process to build a ballroom that he claims will hold around 1,000 people and will apparently not interfere with the rest of the architecture of the white house. Trump claims, “It’ll be near it but not touching it and pays total respect to the existing building, which I’m the biggest fan of,”. https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/photos-white-house-starts-east-wing-demolition-to-build-trumps-ballroom Many of these statements have also been including in articles by The Washington Post, The BBC, and The New York Times, making this a mass reported event.

An article from The Washington Post has confirmation from an anonymous White House official that the construction processes for Trump's ballroom replacing the East Wing started on Monday, October 20th. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2025/10/20/white-house-begins-demolishing-east-wing-facade-build-trumps-ballroom/

This claim made by the New York Times where it states that the East Wing of the White House is being torn down to make room for a new ballroom is accurate. The New York Times in their article includes a video of the construction taking place. The video shows a crane stripping away at parts of the White House. The video zooms out to show the White House fully under construction. This article/video is from the New York Times which is a reliable source and it uses a primary source, which is the video. Other reliable sources such as the Whitehouse.gov also confirm that the project is legitimate and underway. This is a project involving the White House so the White House's official government website confirming the project, albeit with the more positive title of "White House Ballroom Continues Proud Presidential Legacy" shows that this is truly happening and the New York Times report is accurate. The White House website could be labeled as a biased source because their article includes talking points about "manufactured outrage" and "unhinged leftists," but ultamately, that is not relevant for determining whether or not the New York Times article is factual, because the New York Times article is reporting on the White House's actions and even know the White House is biased, they are still confirming the New York Times' reports with their own article. Other reputable news sources such as CNN and CBS News also reported that this demolition of the East Wing was taking place. No reputable sources refuted the claims that the New York Times made.
