The claim is true but lacks nuance. Rob Jetten, leader of the D66 centrist party in the Netherlands, ran a tight battle with Geert Wilders, leader of the far-right PVV party, on Wednesday before it was recently announced by domestic networks that "based on figures from postal voters abroad he could now be declared the winner" (BBC. 2025). While this potentially kicks out Jetten's largest opponent, he still has the struggle of gathering a coalition, which could take months.

Based on information sourced from Yahoo News, the excitement surrounding Rob Jetten is largely due in part to D66's tripled seat count, "marking the elections largest gains." Which contrasts Wilders significant losses from a huge record marked in 2023. However, this parallel concerns Jetten's future success in garnering support from other parties. In 2023, Wilders was able to produce an all-conservative coalition (Yahoo News. 2025) but "his partners refused to endorse him as prime minister" under fears that he was too extremist. Although Jetten has shown to fair on both sides of the political spectrum, there is still a long path till he can secure the prime minister's seat.
