Due to new directives from the Trump administration, new visa applicants may be rejected if they have any medical conditions, such as diabetes, obesity, or cancer. The new guidelines instruct visa officers to reject applicants based on age or health conditions, amongst other aspects. Health of the applicants’ children or parents is also considered during the process.

A recent CBS article also shares that, although assessing applicants’ health was already a part of the process, it has now become an extensive focus. Visa officials have been instructed to determine, without any medical training, if applicants are more likely to have a medical emergency or require public assistance for their condition at any point during their lifespan. Applicants of nearly all visa types will be affected by these new guidelines, though  it is likely to predominantly affect those applying for permanent residency.

The article provided talks about how immigrants may be denied over new health guidance provided by the Trump administration. I have also found in another article that the State Department sent to embassy and consular officials and examined by KFF Health News, directs visa officers to deem applicants ineligible to enter the U.S. for several new reasons, including age or the likelihood they might rely on public benefits. There are many articles written about this new guidance and how it will affect people with illnesses like diabetes. The cbs article is a very credible source and it talks about how the cable reads. "Certain medical conditions — including, but not limited to, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases, cancers, diabetes, metabolic diseases, neurological diseases, and mental health conditions — can require hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of care." quoting directly from the cable is credible however talking about the initial claim made of that you can no longer get approved if you have diabetes is very misleading. They have never explicitly said you can't get approved, however it does it make it more challenging due to the new guidance on health.
