Accusations made towards New York mayor Zohran Mamdani before his win in the Mayoral elections claim that Mamdani holds antisemitic ideals. This accusation of antisemitism comes from political opponents and some Jewish community leaders due to his strong criticisms of Israel's government and its military actions in Gaza. Critics, including Israeli government officials, have labeled him an "outspoken antisemite" and "Hamas supporter". However, some Jewish leaders have supported him, and he successfully won the mayoral election, suggesting the claims did not deter all voters. Mamdani strongly rejects these claims, arguing they are politically motivated and that he is simply holding Israel accountable for their actions in Gaza. (New York Times, 2025), (NPR, 2025)

This claim from the New York Times is not outright saying that Zohran Mamdani is anti-semitic, they are saying that there have been accusations from opponents. It is true that opponents have been calling Zohran Mamdani anti-semetic, but the claim that he is anti-semitic is false.

Mamdani is anti-zionist, which zionism seeks to defend Israel amid the genocide in Gaza, and is an ethnocultural nationalist movement. Anti-semitism is a prejudice or hatred towards Jewish people. There is a difference between anti-semitic and anti-zionist.

According to Politico, a reliable source, Mamdani said:

“‘The conflation of anti-zionism and antisemitism is a conflation that seeks to distract, delegitimize, and really, what it is, is an attempt to silence,’ Mamdani said in an interview with the South Asian Avant-Garde in 2021.

‘Antisemitism is such a real issue in this city, and it has been hard to see it weaponized by candidates who do not seem to have any real interest in tackling it, but rather in using it as a pretext to make political points,’ he also said on the campaign trail, less than a week before Election Day.”

According to NPR, a reliable public news agency,

“After the ADL announced its scrutiny of Mamdani, the mayor-elect told reporters, ‘I take the issue of antisemitism incredibly seriously.’

Mamdani continued: ‘I think anyone is free to catalog the actions of our administration. I have some doubts about Jonathan's ability to do so honestly, given that he previously said I had not visited any synagogues, only to have to correct himself.’”

On Mamdani’s Instagram, he has many posts talking about how he supports the Jewish people of New York, and will serve them equally to any other New York citizen.

The claim that Zohran Mamdani is anti-semitic is false. Most of these claims have been made because he is against the actions Israel has made in Gaza, or simply because he is Muslim.
