American comedians are facing backlash for performing at a comedy event in Saudi Arabia. This is because of the countries poor human rights conditions and the comedians helping hide this or financially support the country. Some of the most prominent comedians attending the event are Dave Chappelle, Kevin Hart, Louis C.K., Pete Davidson, and Jessica Kirson. Saudi Arabia is also not allowing these comedians to speak negatively on the matter during their sets.
Though these big name comedians should rethink their choices on where to perform, it's an industry standard to perform in big cities with the largest profit. Additionally, dozens of other performers and musical artists with much larger folllowings have performed recently in Saudi Arabia and faced minimal backlash in comparison to these comedians. Its extremely important that these big name performers avoid supporting countries that don't value basic human right but the blame needs to be put on all performers and not only focused on this group of comedians. Its also unfair to limit the free speech of performers in Saudi Arabia as many people would view it differently if the comedians were allowed to actively denounce the country's human rights laws during their set.
