Recently a transgender TSA employee has sued because they are not allowed to perform pat downs and therefore not allowed to do a core component of the job. This is an extremely controversial topic as the TSA's rule has always been that pat downs can only be performed by TSA officers of the same gender as the person they are patting down in order to prevent sexual harassment claims and general discomfort. However, it is still extremely unfair to say that a transgender TSA officer can't perform any pat downs when it's such an important task.

Though the TSA is treating their transgender employees unfairly, its hard to come up with a perfect solution to the problem. The TSA can't really just allow any of their officers to pat down others, as sexual assault and harassment claims would skyrocket and many people would no longer feel comfortable being pat down which is essential for airport safety. It will be interesting to see what the TSA will do in this situation as they will face backlash either way.

Think of this as your investigation log. Answer each question to explain what you discovered and how you got there.

1. Write a brief overall summary of your findings.
2. What primary sources did you find (e.g., transcripts, videos of politician speeches, tweets from public figures, scientific studies)? For each source, write at least one or two sentences explaining what you learned. Include all links.
3. What secondary sources did you find (e.g., newspapers, magazines)? Only use secondary sources if sufficient primary sources are not available. For each source, write at least one or two sentences explaining what you learned. Include all links.
4. What potential biases or interests might each of your sources have?
5. What evidence supports the claim you are fact-checking?
6. What evidence undermines the claim you are fact-checking?
7. What happened when you tried contacting the person or group who made the original claim? (Always try to contact them—it’s okay if you don’t get a reply. For example, if the claim is that the president said something, try reaching out to the administration. If it was a Bluesky user, message that user on Bluesky.)

I found that this claim seems to be true and not misleading. One thing I would like to note is that the TSA agents are not exactly being treated unfairly, but aren't being seen or heard on why they feel discriminated against. This is because of laws set in place where "only two genders will be recognized," so women strictly pat down women and vice versa. Primary sources that I found were the article given in the fact-check, as well as "Lawsuit challenges TSA's ban on transgender officers conducting pat-downs." Potential biases could be that someone doesn't agree with this ban and believes transgender people should be able to do pat-downs on whatever gender they identify as. Evidence that supports the claim includes the laws being set in place by President Trump, as well as lawsuits taking place from transgender TSA agents being mistreated. When I tried contacting the person who posted this, I did not get a reply.
