After being placed on non-paid disciplinary leave, Cleveland Guardians pitcher Emmanuel Clase was arrested in Brooklyn on charges relating to rigging pitches in game. The all-star pitcher and his teammate, Luis Ortiz, were both arrested on these charges. Ortiz had been paid $5,000 by throwing an intentional ball to start the game, a set up in which Clase facilitated. The pair did it again in June and were both paid $7,000.
The two pitchers could face up to 65 years in prison if found guilty on all charges. The pitchers began throwing intentional balls which allowed bettors to win wagers on those pitches. In addition to the prison sentence, based on the MLB gambling policy the two pitchers would be banned for life as the were bettors as active participants in a game.
