Civil rights organizations have been arguing that with Meta’s new relaxed approach to taking down social media posts, minority groups within the platforms are much more vulnerable to harmful content and harassment online. These groups recognized that posts with hate, harassment, and misinformation on Meta’s platforms used to be taken down quickly, but are now being left untouched because of Meta’s new idea of “free expression.” Even clearly malicious or false posts are taking much longer to be taken down, and some remain on social media to this day.

This claim is true because advocacy groups like The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights have publicly criticized Meta after reviewing its new policies. They found that the new relaxed policies directly increase the amount of racist, violent, and false content. These new policies harm minority groups at a much higher rate, and something should be done to change that.
