This is true according to many sources. With the recent government shutdown, more people are unable to get food using government assistance. Therefore, many have turned to local food banks. Sources like CNN and CBS reported as much as a 1800% increase in demand. Unfortunately, many of these food pantries are struggling to meet the current demand and will likely run out of food, leaving many with no other resources.
Food banks across the country are pleading for volunteers. One non-profit, Hunger Free America, reported getting over 1600 calls on their hunger hotline in October alone. There is significant uncertainty for the future of the SNAP program in America. Even once the government reaches a deal after the shutdown, there is no idea what the future of welfare programs in America is going to look like.
