Meta said it’s trying out facial-recognition tech to help catch scam ads that use fake or stolen images of celebrities, especially AI-generated ones. These ads often trick people into fake investment schemes, so tools like this could help filter them out. At the same time, it raises privacy questions because users want protection from scams but also don’t want platforms scanning every face they see. Through this claim, I want to clarify what Meta is actually doing versus what people assume. It also raises ethical questions about how much surveillance is appropriate in order to protect users.

The claim that Meta is using facial recognition technology is true. While the link to the sourced Financial Times article seems to be broken, the Meta Help Center states that they are utilizing "embeddings" generated from profile photos for two security features. The first feature that these are used for is to identify scam ads that impersonate "public figures and high-profile individuals". However, this feature seems to be under testing and is only accessible to certain accounts. The second feature (and the one that is available to the general public) is use of facial recognition to verify your identity. This is also done through embeddings, but under the conditions that Meta will delete the embeddings once the security check is done and the user provides consent to facial recognition. However, it can be noted that from 2011 up until its discontinuation in 2021, Facebook allowed its users to opt in to a "Face Recognition System" that sent a notification if they were recognized in a post, as well as recommend them in the tagging menu. While users had to give consent to this feature, Meta faced a lawsuit in 2024 for violating the Texas State Privacy Laws by collecting data on users without their permission.
