Although Taylor Swift herself has not come out and said the song is about Jake Gyllenhaal, there are lyrics within the piece that fans have created connections with. The relationship lasted for about a year while Gyllenhaal was 28 years old, and Swift only 19.

The song includes these lyrics: "You said if we had been closer in age/ Maybe it would've been fine,/ And that made me want to die."

The age gap is very obvious in these lyrics, starting rumors that the song involves this couple.
