In recent years, there has been a link between social media and developing depression, especially in teens and young adults. Social media, such as Instagram and Facebook, make it easier for people to disconnect from the real world and look at the world through their phone lens. Personally, I find that when I use social media, I compare myself to people more frequently, and it oftentimes makes me overthink my own life.

My research supports the claim that social media use can contribute to depression but the relationship is complicated and social media is not the only reason depression can happen. A randomized 143 college student study published in the Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology had two different groups, one using social media normally and one group only using Snapchat, Facebook, and Instagram for 10 minutes each per day. They found the group using only 30 minutes of social media had “significant reductions in loneliness and depression.” The Surgeon General also found that children and adults that spend more than 3 hours per day on social media have a double risk of mental health problems which includes depression and anxiety. Another study published in the International Journal of Adolescence and Youth also found that time spent on social media could lead to addiction and was correlated with “depression, anxiety, and psychological distress.” This research shows heavy use of social media can affect mental health negatively.

The research in the paragraph above strongly related social media use to depression, but that does not mean social media immediately causes depression in everyone who uses it. A large study in 2024 published by JAMA Pediatrics looked at 143 studies involving over 1 million adolescents and found the same conclusion about social media being one of many causes of depression, but the researchers also emphasized limitations in the research. Another study published in Adolescent Research Review found a “small but statistically significant correlation” between social media usage and symptoms of depression but they also said how many studies were cross- sectional. These studies are equally as important because discussing the limitations in studies shows that not all depression can be linked to usage of social media. I would rate this claim true while understanding social media is a risk of depression, not the main cause.

After researching the claim, I found that there is a connection between social media use and depression, especially among adolescents. However, the research is more complicated than simply saying that social media causes depression.

The Surgeon General's Advisory says that social media can present a meaningful risk to the mental health of young people. It reports that adolescents who spend more than three hours per day on social media face about double the risk of mental health problems, including symptoms of depression and anxiety. However, the advisory discusses risk and association rather than saying that social media definitely causes depression.

The APA explains that social media is not automatically harmful or beneficial and that its effects depend on the individual, the content they see, and how they use it. It also specifically states that studies showing causal relationships are rare, meaning there is not enough evidence to simply say that increased social media use causes depression.

There is significant evidence supporting part of the claim. The Surgeon General reports that young people who spend more than three hours a day on social media face roughly twice the risk of experiencing mental health problems, including symptoms of depression and anxiety.

There is also evidence that the relationship can work in the opposite direction. Some research suggests that adolescents who are already experiencing depression may use social media more, meaning depression could contribute to increased social media use rather than social media simply causing depression.

Higher risk of depression and anxiety in teens is linked to spending a lot of time on social media the U.S Surgeon General states. Spending more than three hours a day could cause double the risk of poor mental health. Depending on how often social media is used and what is done on social media it can affect your mental health for instance comparing yourself to others can have a bad affect of your mental health American psychological association explained. National institutes of Health research says several studies has shown electronics have an increase of depression, anxiety. The Mayo Clinic says it also depends on how teens use social media. Viewing certain types of things online could cause mental health risk such as illegal acts, self harm, and eating disorders.
