I came across a post that says "Here's how The Washington Post added Mastodon verification with Mastodon's help https://washpost.engineering/heres-how-the-washington-post-verified-its-journalists-on-mastodon-7b5dbc96985c"

There is not enough information on other sources available regarding this topic but I did find an article by the Washington Post themselves that tells readers how to register for an account. It also mentions that it may be the new Twitter alternative for users who are not a fan of the Musk-owned website. There are lots of other sites that reference the same article that you found but nothing else of source.

I noticed that neimanlab.org linked to the medium.com article about Washington Post's journalist verification process. https://www.niemanlab.org/reading/how-the-washington-post-verified-its-journalists-on-mastodon/

So it might be a legitimate claim?
