Rumors circle the UIUC campus that there is a Dairy Queen in U of I's most infamous buildings. The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences talk about how every student has a different answer on how to get to the Dairy Queen or where it is in the building, simply because there is no Dairy Queen in Altgeld.

The legend of the Altgeld Dairy Queen is an example of how stories can be created and spread through social media. For me, people make up stories and transmit them because humans are interested in stories and find them compelling, and fascinating.

Despite the fact that the Altgeld Dairy Queen does not exist, the legend has become a part of the University of Illinois folklore, and its persistence is a testament to the power of storytelling. The legend of the Altgeld Dairy Queen is a reminder that stories can indeed have a life of their own, and that they can become a part of our cultural heritage.

There is not a DQ inside of Altgeld Hall. I mainly know this because I have had classes in Altgeld and have not seen a DQ. The closest DQ is on University Ave., by the Carle Hospital.

This claim is false meaning there is NOT a Dairy queen in Altgeld Hall unfortunately.

From las.illinois.edu,

"The question has run rampant on social media, particularly UIUC’s reddit page, where people continuously ask how to find the famous ice cream franchise. Other posts, from people who claim to have found the elusive restaurant, give confusing directions (“adjacent to the post office and perpendicular to the bathrooms”) and describe visiting the drive-thru or relaxing with a Blizzard after a tough math exam. They even give reviews."

The quote proves the DQ rumors are false and have been fueled by social media as an ongoing question.

The claim that there is a dairy queen in Altgeld is false. One of the ways you can tell it is false is from the quote "Everyone has a different answer for where the DQ is, like ‘so and so’s office’, the basement, Room 314, or things like that,” said Emily Roth, a senior majoring in mathematics and secondary education." in the Article from the LAS website of University of Illinois. Normally when everyone tells a different story about something then that thing does not exist.

To figure out if there was really a Dairy Queen in Altgeld Hall, I walked there myself! While I got lost multiple times I never came across this “Dairy Queen”. While I believe I did a good job scoping the area out and checking almost every room, I went further into research to make sure I was correct. I found many comments about how this rumor was made up to confuse and mess with freshmen. I was unable to find any information supporting this “DQ in Altgeld” and checked out multiple different University of Illinois sites. As well, Dairy Queens website, all the stores in America are listed. When looking for Dairy Queens in Illinois, Altgeld Hall does not come up. From my experience, I can say Altgeld is tricky to navigate, my guess is that this was a joke talking about how hard it is to get around.

The rumor that there is a Dairy Queen in Altgeld Hall is in fact just a rumor. The official LAS website talks about how many new students fall for this prank, confirming that it is false. U of I officials also mention how they don't know anything about a collaboration with Dairy Queen and Altgeld.

"While there are apparently more than a few students who fall for this latest Altgeld Hall prank, most figure out the truth pretty quickly. " "University officials said they are unaware of any inquiries by the franchise to locate within the building."

This claim is not true. This article says that the rumor was started primarily because the Altgeld building is confusing and not traversed by many people, so it's easy to convince people of rumors about the building.

This is a false statement! According to the college of LAS website, this is a prank that many students have fallen for."While there are apparently more than a few students who fall for this latest Altgeld Hall prank, most figure out the truth pretty quickly." This shows us that this is indeed a prank as the college itself has spoken out about it!
