To comment on your last paragraph about the reason behind the tension, according to BBC and the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), the two areas have different political views and China wants to "unify" Taiwan with China. CFR wrote: "Taiwan, officially known as the Republic of China (ROC), is an island separated from China by the Taiwan Strait. It has been governed independently of mainland China, officially the People’s Republic of China (PRC), since 1949. The PRC views the island as a renegade province and vows to eventually “unify” Taiwan with the mainland. In Taiwan, which has its own democratically elected government and is home to twenty-three million people, political leaders have differing views on the island’s status and relations with the mainland."

In response to Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen meeting with McCarthy, China vowed 'effective' actions against this meeting. In the past week China has held live ammunition drills around the island of Taiwan. China aims to deter Taiwan independence with these drills as a response of the recent meeting with the US.
