According to Cleveland Health Clinic, the worst food a dietician can recommend is in fact baked potato chips. Because of how processed they are, they're bad for your blood sugar and fat storage.

This is only partly true as there are more parts to impact this prompt. Even though the obvious answer is that chips are bad for you, there also comes the question of whether they are fine to snack on in moderation.

https://www.insider.com/healthy-ways-to-eat-chips-2019-1#:~:text=Chips%20are%20fine%20to%20eat,nuts%20are%20other%20chip%20alternatives.

The claim about sodium content is indeed true as there is scientific proof that chips with high sodium content can hurt your heart health. The  Live Strong article claims "Despite their popularity, greasy potato chips are an energy-dense food with little nutritional value. In general, eating chips and similar fried, fatty foods can lead to an unhealthy diet, resulting in weight gain and negative effects on your health."

https://www.livestrong.com/article/440025-why-are-chips-bad-for-you/

They also lack nutritional value and are seen to be an unnecessary part of your diet. According to Universal Health News states " As Boston-based nutritionist Laura Hartung says, “Most chips offer little to no nutritional value and are basically fried carbs full of fat with a little added salt” showing that potato chips are really not that healthy for you.

Though I believe your argument is true I believe its best to fact-check both sides of your argument before posting.

Yes, this is true. According to an article written on Cleveland Clinic titled, "7 Worst Snacks Your Dietitian Would Never Eat," it states that any baked chip is bad for your health. "They’re highly processed and often so low in fat that you can consume large quantities without ever feeling full. This can increase blood sugar and cause an insulin surge, promoting fat storage."

Also, in the same article is states that potato chips are also bad for your health. "Potato chips lack any significant nutritional value, therefore are empty calories, period. They’re also are high in fat, and low in fiber and protein."

https://health.clevelandclinic.org/7-worst-snacks-dietitian-never-eat/

Furthermore, in an article written by Bridget Coila titled, "What are the negative effects of chips," she describes the negative effects on ones health that comes with eating potato chips. These negative effects include weight gain, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. "Chips are typically high in fat and calories, which can raise the risk of weight gain and obesity. One ounce of plain potato chips, or about 15 to 20 chips, contains about 10 grams of fat and 154 calories."

Great job adding multiple sources and explaining each one thoroughly. I liked how you added quotes from both sources as well. There were no opinions just facts given from the source. Good job!

According to the article, "7 Worst Snacks Your Dietitian Would Never Eat" proves that the claim is actually true. They quote, "Potato chips lack any significant nutritional value, therefore are empty calories, period. They’re also are high in fat, and low in fiber and protein". This proves that this claim is indeed accurate.

The claim is accurate in my book. The Cleveland Clinic article states that potato chips are high in fat, while simultaneously being low in fiber and protein. Earlier, they quote saying "They’re highly processed and often so low in fat that you can consume large quantities without ever feeling full. This can increase blood sugar and cause an insulin surge, promoting fat storage." This quote was on baked chips. I have found both of these to be true from experience.

According to, 'Eat this, not that,' states the claim is true. "Well, if you eat too many potato chips you could be worsening your heart health. Especially when you already have high cholesterol," states Cheyenne Buckingham.

Also, according to,' WebMD," the claim is true. "Over time high amounts of salt, sugar, saturated fat, and refined carbs can increase your chances of heart disease," states Carol DerSarkissian.

Therefore, the claim is not misinformation

The claim that chips are bad for you is true; in fact, they don't offer many health benefits aside from little vitamin content only found in certain ones. Most of the time, they are high in cholesterol, high in sodium which can increase blood pressure, high in fat, and are overall low in nutrition, which indicates that chips are indeed bad for one's health as a whole.

Chips can be bad for you but the ultimate effect relies on several factors. Some chips are better than others but most chips have near to no nutritional value.

According to Paramo Snacks, “The sodium content in chips may negatively impact your cardiovascular health. A high intake of sodium can cause an increase in blood pressure, which can lead to stroke, heart failure, coronary heart disease, and kidney disease.”

The article also goes on to state, “If you regularly include chips as part of your diet, you may not be consuming as many nutrients as you should. Chips are typically low in vitamins and minerals, and they tend to displace things in the diet that are higher in nutrients.”

All in all, chips can be bad for you. However, this statement does come with some leniency as factors vary and will affect the outcome. The specific statement regarding chips high in sodium has been proven to have a negative impact.

I agree that the sodium content in chips is unhealthy and can lead to detrimental effects in the body. However, I can confidently say that chips are neither good or bad for you. For instance, the vegetable oil and salt in chips has its benefits. Vegetable oil "contains linolic acid, an omega-6 fatty acid, which is an important part of healthy diet according to a study by the University of Missouri and University of Illinois." While there is some good, there is also some bad, such as the fats that can lead to heart disease.

I like your thoughts about this topic, as it provides reasons for more than one perspective, however, it being bad or good for you ultimately depends on your consumption habits. Good job!

In sum, chips yield low nutritional value while adding a lot of fat and sodium to your diet. According to SF Gate, a single ounce of plain potato chips contains 10 grams of fat and 154 calories. Furthermore, potato chips were reported as generally having 120-180mg of sodium per ounce, while the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends consuming no more than 2,300mg of sodium per day. Therefore, due to the lack of vitamins and other nutrients yielded by potato chips, it can be inferred that they are "bad for you", as the negative aspects of chips are dominant.

Yes, this claim is true. A Livestrong article describes 5 main reasons why potato chips are unhealthy:

1. They're high in sodium.

2. They're high in fat.

3. Their cooking method causes nutrients to degrade.

4. Their cooking process might create harmful byproducts.

5. Eating chips every day can lead to weight gain.

In addition to these points, potato chips are also high in calories. The article notes that 11 to 13 chips may contain over 150 calories. Eating potato chips on occasion is unlikely to affect your overall health, but eating them regularly may have adverse effects. The article suggests that popped chips are a healthier alternative.

I really like how you said chips are okay on occasion, rather than just saying "chips are horrible for your health". i also like how the source suggests an alternative just in case someone does want to use this fact. Your source was also written by a professional and reviewed by a medical professional, so good job!

According to University Health News Daily, chips are definitely bad for you. Boston-based nutritionist Laura Hartung said, "'Most chips offer little to no nutritional value and are basically fried carbs full of fat with a little added salt.'" Knowing that chips are bad for you, it is still okay to eat them, but you should monitor the amount of proportions that you are eating.

Chips ARE bad for you!

There is a reason chips are delicious, they are typically served salted or flavored! This sodium content in chips may negatively impact your cardiovascular health. It is common knowledge that a high intake of sodium can cause an increase in blood pressure, which can lead to many other serious health concerns. Majority of chips are high in sodium, making chips bad for you as they are high in fat and in processed not-good saturated fats (Saxelby, 2017). In general, chips do not have a lot of nutritional value. Eating a lot of chips can cause weight gain and trouble sleeping. Chips are typically low in vitamins and minerals, and they tend to displace things that are higher in nutrients (Colia, 2018). As well, frequent chip consumption can contribute to high cholesterol. The ingredients in chips do not make a healthy snack. While chips are tasty and a very easy on the go snack, if you are concerned with health concerns, be aware of your consumption. Note serving sizes before digging into a bag of chips. Also, eat the chips in moderation, not eating too many in one period. Also, consider substitutes to your normal chips if they are high in sodium and other unhealthy components. Healthier substitutes to popular chips like lays could be Kale or carrot chips. Crunchy fruit, vegetables, and nuts are other chip alternatives.
