My research supports the claim that there is currently no scientific evidence showing that blue light from digital devices, at normal levels of use, causes permanent damage to the human eye. There is evidence showing spending significant time looking at blue light can cause eye strain, headaches, or dry eyes, but this is different than actually damaging the retina or other important parts of the eye. These symptoms fade after being off a screen for a good amount of time.
One of the strongest supporting sources I found was a 2023 Cochrane systematic review that analyzes 17 random controlled trials involving about 620 participants. The researchers looked at Blue Light glasses and determined whether or not they improve your visual performance, reduced eye strain, or protected the retina. One strong conclusion found was blue light lenses “may not reduce short-term eyestrain associated with computer work”. The researchers also explained that existing studies did not have strong evidence that blue light glasses protect the macula. They also added that these studies were short and that long-term research would be needed to come to a real conclusion.

I also found a scientific review looked at by the National Library of Medicine's PubMed database that looked at Blue Light related to Eye Health. They found that certain wavelengths and intensities of blue light could potentially cause damage to eye structures tested in laboratory and animal experiments. However, they also concluded that there is no evidence that normal use of screens or LEDs damages the human retina. They also looked at natural protections and concluded an interesting point. The article said “there is no evidence that the use of screens and LEDs is harmful to the human retina.”
Blue Light Exposure: Ocular Hazards and Prevention-A Narrative Review
Another scientific review published by Ophthalmic Surgery, Lasers and Imaging Retina looked at whether modern technology and electronic displays harm the retina. The authors found that laboratory studies showed retinal damage from Blue Light only under certain experimental conditions and human research has not been expansive enough. They said “there is no evidence of acute damage to the human retina from typical exposure to blue light from electronic devices.” The trend right now among all studies, is more human testing is needed to come to a final conclusion.
Ocular Tolerance of Contemporary Electronic Display Devices
Lastly, a more recent study done in 2024 looked at experiments and experimental models of blue light eye damage. The research provided a broad interpretation of the study because researchers have been able to produce blue light related retinal damage in experimental modes. However, they said harmful effects depend on factors like intensity, wavelength, and length of exposure. In the article they stated,“blue light-induced retinal damage is dependent on wavelength, intensity, and exposure time.”

After reviewing a lot of research, I would rate this claim true. The current evidence does not show that normal exposure to Blue Light will actually harm the human eye. All research conclusions are limited because of the amount of research done on humans. There has been some research and laboratory or animal conditions but those results cannot be applied to normal human screen usage. More research will be needed but based on the evidence currently available I believe the claim is true.
