Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio--stage name Bad Bunny--posted a story to his Instagram account @badbunnypr that featured this video by Kamala Harris's account. The story has since expired, and I was only able to find one screenshot of the story.

I found multiple other news stories either claiming Bad Bunny supports VP Harris or mentions his Instagram story, including https://apnews.com/article/harris-bad-bunny-latino-vote-18ed2c1307264f2651ab4375d4b5070d https://www.cnn.com/2024/10/31/politics/celebrity-endorsements-puerto-rico-harris-trump/index.html https://www.cnn.com/2024/10/27/politics/bad-bunny-kamala-harris-puerto-rico/index.html and https://thehill.com/blogs/in-the-know/4959298-bad-bunny-puerto-rico-msg-trump-rally-tony-hinchcliffe/

While multiple sources have stated Bad Bunny supports Harris, the Instagram story does not include any statement clearly verifying his support of Harris, and none of the articles I have found the name of Bad Bunny's representative who they're citing. The Kamala Harris video that Bad Bunny shared includes Harris talking about the issues Puerto Ricans face, including issues Bad Bunny has spoken on in the past like the electrical system and federal relief following Hurricane Maria. Due to Harris's statements aligning with Bad Bunny's statements, it is safe to say he supports Harris's potential policies. Additionally, he posted this video captioned "garbage" in response to a comedian at a Trump rally calling Puerto Rico "a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean". This 8-minute long video celebrates Puerto Rican icons and culture. The video ends with a message in Spanish that essentially says Puerto Ricans are fighters and will remind anyone who forgets that fact. Due to this message and its position as a refutation of the statements made at the Trump rally, it's also logical to assume Bad Bunny is anti-Trump and that his statement about Puerto Ricans being fighters implies voting for Harris as a fight against Trump.

Overall, there isn't enough clear evidence on whether Bad Bunny supports Harris or if he only supports voting for Harris as a fight against Trump. Until Bad Bunny or a clearly named representative makes a statement confirming his support for Harris, any claims of Bad Bunny supporting Harris would be exaggerated or at least partially misleading.

I liked your analysis of this issue, especially how you went and found the screen shot of him reposting Kamala's story! I also like how you incorporated prior research on how he has spoken on issues on the past about federal relief for Hurricane Maria and making that connection that he probably supports similar policies. Great job!

This claim is not true, but rather a comment on standing up for Puerto Rican culture and origin. He does show some form of support, but not straight up endorse.

The source linked is a credible source, NBC. It's been the oldest and most established broadcasting network since 1925 (Briticanna 2024). They are committed to reporting “compelling, diverse and visually engaging stories” (NBC 2024).

However, the original source that they are referring to in the article is a compelling instagram video displaying Bad Bunny’s proud support for his Puerto Rican culture posted on Instagram. He describes the cultural and historical journey of Puerto Rico and highlights the country’s successes like the first latina woman to win an olympic gold medal in Tennis, Monica Puig.

Within the post, he doesn’t explicitly say that he’s supporting Kamala Harris, but rather reminding the public that Puerto Rican culture is rich, full of achievement, and resilient. He ends with a statement at the end showcasing this (has been translated from spanish to english): “We have been fighting since day one of our existence, we are the definition of heart and resilience. Here we are, here we are, and for those of you who forget who we are…rest assured, we proudly remind you.”

This could be a response rendered from Donald Trump’s rally from a comedian that made jokes about how Puerto Rico is a “floating island of garbage.” As the caption in the video read “garbage” referring to the comedian's comments.

But again, there is no active campaign sponsor from Kamala within the post.

According to Billboard, Bad Bunny has shown his support by reposting an instagram video of Kamala Harris on his story 4 times. Kamala could be seen trying to gain Puerto Rican’s support and reassuring them that the comedian's actions were not ok: “And this election is not just a choice between Donald Trump and me. It is a choice between two very different visions for our nation. One, his, focused on the past and on himself, and the other ours, that is focused on the future and on you. Puerto Rico is home to some of the most talented, innovative and ambitious people in our nation, and Puerto Ricans deserve a president who sees and invests in that strength.”

While Bad Bunny may be doing that, a representative of Bad Bunny told CNN that the reposting of the video was not a valid endorsement, but proof of support. They later say that his political focus has “always been on Puerto Rico.”

From what it looks like Bad Bunny is upset about the disturbing jokes made at Puerto Ricans and wanted to showcase how Peutro Ricans have more to offer than being labeled garage. Also, how it’s not acceptable to have these negative preconceived notions when one clearly doesn’t know anything about the culture itself.  He stood up for his people and ignited social action to try to show others that Puerto Rico is a strong, diverse, and music-rich culture.
