This quote was stated by former President Donald Trump during the first 2024 presidential debate on September 10th, 2024 in Philadelphia against current VP Kamala Harris. Former President Trump claimed this in response to Harris' statement about his rallies--he claimed "America is a failing nation" in such ways that "they (immigrants) are eating the pets of the people that live there".

I first heard of this claim during the live debate in September, and found a transcript about this debate posted by ABC news on September 10th, 2024. I was not necessarily unsure if it was fake news or not, because I'm sure he was stating a baseless claim to try to "bolster" his party by spreading an essentially racist internet rumor on national TV. Nevertheless, this claim was investigated to be true or not.

The claim that Former President Trump introduces has been debunked by the mayor of Springfield, Illinois according to this article written by Fox News; In this article, it reads: "Just hours earlier Tuesday, Springfield Mayor Rob Rue said during a news conference that reports that immigrants were eating residents' pets were not accurate." This information comes from an interview with the mayor of Springfield, Ohio. There is a direct quote attached to this claim in addition to the article's claim. The mayor claims, "'We wish to clarify that we have not been able to verify any credible reports or specific claims of pets being harmed, injured or abused by individuals within the immigrant community,' he said. 'The news story regarding a cat being killed or consumed did not originate in Springfield. It actually involved a Canton woman who was arrested for animal cruelty last month.'"

A second source, The Columbus Dispatch, reiterates this claim as false, as they say "Local officials say it's not true" in reference to the claim about Haitian immigrants eating cats and dogs. These are two separate news sources that both are in agreement with the claim that Haitian immigrants are not, in fact, eating cats and dogs.

When I looked at your piece of evidence, the transcript, I found that the debate moderator had already gotten in contact with the city of Springfield, Ohio to see if there were any reports of people eating animals and this is what David Muir, the moderator, said. "[the city manager] told us there have been no credible reports of specific claims of pets being harmed, injured or abused by individuals within the immigrant community." Which seems to prove that Donald Trumps claim about pets being eaten is purely racist rhetoric meant to further divide the country.

You did a very nice job fact checking this. I like how you went all the way to investigating the debate and the debate moderator getting in touch with Springfield, Ohio. It is true that this is a made up thing that didn't have any credibility.

This is a really beneficial factcheck to this quote. I think the way you directly addressed the baseline facts of this outlandish claim was good in showing that this is all propaganda.

Verifying the Transcript of the Debacle

I went over the debate transcript from ABC News as well as CNN and The Washington Post among other significant sources. For important public events, these dependable news sources often provide accurate, exact debate transcripts. The official transcripts did not, however, include any direct quotes or reference to Springfield, Ohio, in regard to immigrants consuming pets.
Given no significant news source or debate transcript verifying Trump made this particular comment during the debate, the allegation seems to be either inflated or maybe created.
Background of "America as a Failing Nation" Claims:

Former President Trump did stress themes like "America is failing" and addressed issues like poverty and violence in several locations throughout the discussion, but he did not explicitly cite Springfield, Ohio or immigrants dining on pets.
Trump has a history of controversial remarks meant to highlight immigration and crime concerns. Still, in this instance, there is no confirmed documentation of his directly asserting immigrants are consuming pets.
Look for Springfield evidence of pet-eating incidents.

Searching local Springfield, Ohio, news sources like The Springfield News-Sun and other Ohio-based news sources found no record of events involving immigrants dining on animals. This assertion seems to be a bogus rumor; no reliable sources corroborate it.
Fact-checking sites like Snopes and PolitiFact have also previously disproved similar, too bold assertions about immigrants eating animals, which are often based more on false prejudices than on accurate reporting.

Your argument is presented well and you provide a lot of relevant information. Tough I think it would have been better if you included your sources or some direct quotes. It would have made your points a lot more solid.

This is a very well-researched response. I think you did well with verifying the falseness of the claim across and between relevant sources. I agree with the previous commenter, however. Linking your sources in your response would have been helpful, but you do name them, so your findings are corroborable, though it would take a little work to do so. Direct links crediting your sources would be best.

False. This claim is completely baseless, as are many of Trump's claims. Immediately following his comment on dogs and cats being eaten in Springfield Ohio, the moderator, David Muir is quick to correct him on live television saying "I just want to clarify here, you bring up Springfield, Ohio. And ABC News did reach out to the city manager there. He told us there have been no credible reports of specific claims of pets being harmed, injured or abused by individuals within the immigrant community --". https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/harris-trump-presidential-debate-transcript/story?id=113560542
