Looking into this claim, Walt Disney World will not be lowering the drinking age to 18. The main claim pulled this from a satire site. It was someone on tik tok claiming this. Looking more into it this is not true. For Disney world to be able to do something like this it would take a lot of time and result in a battle between them and Florida since the drinking age is 21. Overall this is fake news from an unreliable source.

This claim uses misleading terms in order to describe the current situation between the state of Florida and Disney. Disney does plan on lowering the drinking age to 18 in specific areas of the park, like Epcot, but in order to do that they have to beat an ongoing lawsuit against the state of Florida. This process will be long and is subject to change at any point meaning Disney may not get the authorization needed to lower the drinking age in the park.

Isn't this satire? Did you check the origin of the claim to see if it's a satirical site?

This claim was from a website discussing fake news. The central Washington University posed this to show what fake news may look like. The claim came from Mouse Trap News a satirical website that posts obviously fake Disney news. On their website they have articles called "Disney World announces discrimination days" and "NEW die at Disney experience". The "evidence" they have provided is from the ongoing battel between the Florida government and Disney World. This battle does not have to do with the drinking age.

The article linked is a fact-checking site that uses this claim as an example. It was originally a TikTok video that made its way to ABC news and took off. The article backing up the claim is from an untrustworthy satirical site. There are many articles pointing out the lack of validity in the claim such as: https://www.pnj.com/story/news/2023/09/11/disney-world-remove-legal-drinking-age-requirement-florida-debunked/70822543007/ and  https://www.poynter.org/tfcn/2022/is-disney-really-trying-to-lower-the-drinking-age-to-18-on-its-property/.

This claim is false. The article is basing the information off of a Tiktok video. The original site it came from is a satirical site. I'd say this article is both misleading and satirical, making it fake news. The title is intriguing to readers as it shocks them, but it's nothing to be taken seriously.

I agree that this claim is false and how the title may seem initially interesting to readers due to its absurdity. It would be unacceptable if Walt Disney were even to attempt to lower the drinking age to 18 with the minimum legal drinking age (MLDA) laws in the Unites States set the legal age when people can buy and consume alcohol at 21 years old.

The main claim here is that Disney is trying to lower the drinking age to 18 in their parks. This claim was first discovered on a tik tok video posted by "mousetrapnews" which is a news source dedicated to reporting on any and all Disney park related news.

The claim goes into further detail, stating that Disney World was battling Florida government in court in order to potentially receive a resort exemption, allowing them to sell alcohol to those who are at least 18. This story was eventually reported by ABC news, despite the original claim having no factual basis that Disney plans on battling the Florida governent.

This claim can't be found on any other reputable news sites, which makes it very unreliable, as this would be such big news it would certainly gain the attention of other news stations.

Upon doing further research surrounding the original poster, "mousetrapnews", it is clear that they are a fake news site dedicated to posting satirical Disney related articles.

Excellent fact check! I like how you defined the claim, explained the context and the background, and finally came upon a conclusion. It is interesting that ABC news picked up on a story that had no factual basis. One would assume that a major news company like that would fact check and sift through sources first. This may mean that even large news companies find news from unreliable social media posts. I wish you added links to your sources at the end, but overall great post!

This was a very well done fact check. You do a really good job of going through the history of the claim, knocking each down as you go. It's clear that you spent a good deal of time checking this claim, and I was left with no questions. The only thing that could have helped to knock down the claim in full is providing the source you used to find your evidence.

Excellent fact check. The research done into finding the original source of the claim is well done. Your fact check would be better however if you linked to the original TikTok video that allegedly started this rumor.

This claim is clearly false as it was started on TikTok. It is also safe to say that a claim like this is outrageous to make as the legal age to drink in the US is 21. Therefore, no one will have an exception to the law.

The linked article is itself a resource as it is a fact checking site from Central Washington University - https://libguides.lib.cwu.edu/c.php?g=625394&p=4391900 - It used the claim as an example of fake news, specifically pointing out how the origin of the claim comes from a satirical website before it was spread on social media. Here's a link to the origin site - https://mousetrapnews.com/drinking-age-at-disney-world-may-be-lowered-to-18/

after looking into your claim that walt disney world is going to lower the drinking age to 18, I found it to be false. The site this claim originated from is "the world’s best satire and parody site" and exists only to write fake news stories about disney world. This claim was also featured on abc 10 news "fact or fiction" segment and was found to be fiction. As well as the claim being false it is illegal for an organization to sell minors alcohol, and illegal for minors to possess alcohol, so walt disney world lowering the drinking age to 18 would not be legally possible.
