It seems that this claim comes from a misunderstanding in the phrasing of study results from this article. It first cites that 44% of Gen Z Americans (18-24) watch Anime, and separately says that that demographic prefers Anime to the 3 major American sports. 44% is still a high number, higher than I expected, but it doesn't mean that the rest of the public prefers Anime to those sports. This only says that the 44% of Gen Z who watches Anime prefers it to major American sports. Because this is hard to measure, however, and there is certainly a stronger than expected foothold for Anime in Americans, it is hard to say that this isn't true. It is, however, a misunderstanding of the article and its cited study.

This fact-check is great as you give us readers an understanding of the claim made. You also breakdown what the article is saying exactly and use the provided statistics from the article to help do so. I think it would've been beneficial to look into the study and provide even more information, like how they conducted this study and got the numbers they got.

It is very important that you pointed out how the claim comes from a misunderstanding of the original article. It brings up the point that it is somewhat true, but as a whole is not. There are important distinctions with that data so it is good that you were able to figure out the truth. I do wonder though if there are any other sources who are reporting on this as well.
