If you identify as anything other than male or female, you have a mental illness.

The claim that identifying as a gender other than male or female constitutes a mental illness is not supported by leading health organizations. Both the American Psychological Association and the World Health Organization, recognize that diverse gender identities are part of the human experience and do not correlate to mental illness.
The APA affirms evidence-based care for transgender, gender-diverse, and nonbinary individuals. They emphasize that "diverse gender identities are not mental disorders and highlight the importance of providing inclusive and supportive care to promote mental health and well-being."
https://www.apa.org/about/policy/transgender-nonbinary-inclusive-care.pdf?
In the 11th revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11), the World Health Organization classifies "gender incongruence" from the mental health disorders chapter to the sexual health chapter. This change reflects a modern understanding of gender identity, acknowledging that diverse gender identities are not mental illnesses but variations of human sexuality

In summary, leading health organizations show and respect that identifying as a gender other than male or female is a valid expression of human diversity and is not classified as a mental illness.

Those whose gender identification falls into a category other than male or female are likely to experience gender dysphoria. Gender dysphoria is defined as feeling a difference between your gender identity and your sex assigned at birth, and while it may lead to feelings of distress, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders handbook explicitly states that "gender non-conformity is not in itself a mental disorder". While it is possible that that those that do not conform to traditional gender labels can have mental disabilities, to say that there is a cause and effect relationship between the two is objectively false.

Great response! I like how you used multiple reliable and well-known sources like the DSM-5 to explain why this claim is false. The original claim comes from an image posted on social media, meaning anyone could've posted it, furthering its non-credibility. It was probably just posted to start an argument, but I think you did a good job proving them wrong.

I think this is a very resourceful answer. You provide a lot of sources so that viewers can double check what you are saying for themselves instead of just taking your word for it. I think it was be easier to digest if the sources were placed within answered to show where your ideas and findings are coming from.

Great response. I genuinely feel for the people struggling with gender dysphoria; it must be tough. To label it simply as a mental illness isn't fair; it's a very complex issue with many factors that play into why someone would feel this way.

Your use of the DSM-5 and multiple credible sources strengthens your argument by providing a well-supported, factual basis for understanding gender dysphoria. You effectively clarify that gender nonconformity itself is not a mental disorder, an important distinction that counters common misconceptions. Additionally, it’s worth noting that stigma, bullying, and societal rejection can contribute to mental health challenges for nonbinary and gender-nonconforming individuals-not their identity itself. By emphasizing that there is no inherent cause-and-effect relationship between gender nonconformity and mental disability, you highlight the need for a more nuanced and informed discussion on the topic. Great job!

This statement would be called gender dysphoria, this happens when and individual is stuck between their birth gender and their identity gender. I wouldn’t say it’s a mental illness but it is sure a disorder.
