This claim, which appears to be a clear infringement on rights of the first amendment, is in fact valid. BBC published an article on October 15, 2025 titled, “Top US news outlets push back against Pentagon’s reporting restrictions,” in which they disclose the memo the Pentagon sent out regarding the new restrictions and the backlash produced by top news companies.
The Department of Defense, now called the Department of “War,” stated, as reported by BBC, “DoW information must be approved for public release by an appropriate authorising official before it is released, even if it is unclassified.” The new memo includes that one must have the proper “credentials” in order to get information from the Pentagon. Following several leaks the Pentagon has experienced within the past few months, the Department suddenly cracked down on the freedom of the press, and BBC quotes Peter Hegseth’s social media comment regarding the movement of the press in the Pentagon for he states, “Wear a badge and follow the rules- or go home.” What leaves him to decide the integrity of journalists across the nation and what information is “authorized” or not to the people I do not know.
Press, journalists, and news companies across the country are calling this act a direct attack on first amendment rights. Associated Press published an article titled, “Journalists turn in access badges, exit Pentagon rather than agree to new reporting rules,” and with the exodus of these writers the coverage on what’s going with the American military begins to slip away from the people. New sources like The Guardian, Harvard Kennedy School, and NPR argue that this new policy impacts the transparency and trust in the Pentagon, as a new wave of right-wing reporters enter its doors. 40 to 50 members of the Pentagon press corps proudly walked out together on October 15th, with boxes, papers, copiers, and other belongings in hand, after turning in their credentials, for they chose not to accept the abuse of their constitutional rights.
